The efforts of the ground forces battling the fire in Dadia are focused on contain it at its southwestern front, Climate Crisis and Civil Protection Minister Christos Stylianides said on Monday.
Stylianides, who is staying in the area for the second day, together with the general secretary for civil protection, Vasilios Papageorgiou, and senior Fire Brigade staff, said that the situation had been reassessed and decisions made that mainly concerned the south-west front, where new operations would be attempted by ground forces.
The minister spoke of “a difficult night” in which the flames had rekindled in Dadia and underlined: “A great effort was made by everyone. With proper coordination, precautionary, organised evacuations of the citizens were carried out, mainly of people in vulnerable groups with respiratory problems.
Their transfer was carried out very well and the residents are already in hotels.”
Stylianides said a battle was underway “to ensure the future of this extraordinary ecosystem. After this difficult battle, experts will have to consider how to restore the damage caused by the fire. Above all, we must consider the resilience of this ecosystem in the future,” he noted.
