The crew digging the new Distomo sewerage system stumbled upon a tomb from the Byzantine or Ottoman period, according to initial estimates, and the archaeologists immediately "fell" on it with their shovels and brooms!
The grave, made of ceramic, with only bones and no offerings, was found on Boufidou Street, almost in front of the door of the Church of the Virgin Mary, at the edge or outside the open drainage ditch, according to the DISTOMOS BEACH group on Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/share/p/198bKhsctP/ ), who presented the topic.
Its evaluation and dating have not been completed – something that will be done by taking into account other archaeological, historical, etc. data. With the first bone found, before the grave, the team was led to believe that it might have been buried by someone from those massacred by the Germans in 1944, but with the discovery of the ceramic grave a little further away, this possibility was ruled out.
The location of the tomb is, as estimated, between the main ancient strong wall of ancient Amvryssos and an inner bastion. The main wall (which also passes under the church of Panagia) is a continuation on one side of the wall that has been found in the Grondi house and on the other in the Statha house.
The work continues.
