On the island of Rhodes, volunteers go through the flames to save their fellow human beings... and we in front of the television remain stunned, moved and proud of our Rhodesian compatriots! as harien est' man, when man n.
Volunteers, with their action, put themselves at the service of the whole. They live in a higher moral sphere, which is difficult to reach when daily war and violence plague humanity. And yet, in this small country of ours, when other peoples were in ignorance and serving violence, our ancestors founded faith in the concept of man and taught solidarity in society. Hellenism in its long journey formulated the highest values for man, and transmitted them to other peoples. The solidarity of the New Greeks, which has been repeatedly manifested, is not accidental.
The volunteers, sensitive to the messages of the times, sympathize and stand by the helpless, offering them security and hope. Solidarity, reciprocity and care for fellow human beings forge human relationships. Solidarity, however, is not an easy way of life, and, unfortunately, it does not seem to move the European Union, despite the fact that its visionaries in their declaration highlighted solidarity as the first necessary condition for the formation of this Union of peoples.
As Professor ERDodds observes in his related study, the Greek moves, from antiquity to the present day, between correct speech and absurd situations. Indeed, the sensitive and so humane Greek is both gullible and naive, contrasts are in his nature. He believes that just as he himself is ready to offer his help, so others will help him when the need arises. He is also gullible towards Greek and foreign politicians, who have repeatedly disappointed him. His character moved our national poet Dionysios Solomos, who, addressing the Iptanisians, characteristically said: "My unfortunate people, good and beloved, always gullible and always betrayed."
