With a heavy heart, we say goodbye today to our friend, the symbolic woman, the lawyer with the cassock and the flame of justice: Maria Spyraki, née Georgiou.
Maria was not just a dynamic lawyer. She was a restless soul, a fighter, with deep social sensitivity. She was always by the side of prisoners, vulnerable people, abused women and children who suffered sexual violence. Her presence in the lives of many was light and hope.
I will forever remember her for her passion and her truth. I will never forget her phrase that perfectly characterized her:
"I don't practice law in heels, but in boots."
And so it was. Always on the front lines. Always where there was a need for voice and strength.
Her disappearance, under unclear circumstances and with possible serious medical negligence, is shocking. The authorities are investigating the case upon the order of the Athens First Instance Prosecutor, Mr. Ioannis Sevi, with an autopsy having already been carried out at the request of her close friends and partner.
But for us, Maria will remain immortal. Through her work, her battles, her values.
Have a good trip, Maria.
We will always remember you as you were: authentic, unyielding, brave.
With love, Ioanna Lazarou
