A day that condenses faith and homeland, heaven and earth, Evangelism and Revolution. March 25th is a symbol. It is the meeting of the divine message of hope with the human decision for freedom.
Our Church celebrates the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary. That moment when the Archangel Gabriel brings the joyful message to the Virgin Mary. And her response, “Behold, I am the handmaid of the Lord; be it done to me according to your word,” becomes the greatest act of freedom in the history of humanity.
Because our Virgin Mary is not forced. She chooses. She is not afraid. She trusts.
She doesn't back down. She offers herself to God's plan.
In an era like ours, full of uncertainty, value crises, confusion and spiritual fatigue, the message of the Annunciation is more timely than ever:
Freedom is born through faith. Hope blooms through humility. Light, mental peace, and spiritual upliftment come when man says "yes" to good.
At the same time, on the same day, in 1821, our ancestors raised the banner of the Revolution. With faith in God and with the slogan "Freedom or Death", figures such as Theodoros Kolokotronis and so many other fighters dared the impossible. They had no certainty of victory. But they had faith. And faith became strength.
Moreover, the choice of March 25th as the symbolic starting point of the Revolution was not accidental. The fighters knew that national freedom cannot exist without a spiritual foundation. Without identity. Without roots.
We live in complex times. Wars, insecurity, social isolation, a crisis of standards. Technology advances, but the heart often remains alone.
Information increases, but wisdom decreases. The greatest challenge of our time is not external danger, but internal weakening, the loss of meaning.
Within this environment, the message of this day is essential and universal, to teach our children that freedom is not arbitrariness, but responsibility. That faith is not a habit, but a living relationship. That the homeland is not a slogan, but a community of memory and love.
Because the new generation doesn't just need knowledge. It needs role models. It needs truth. It needs consistency. It needs to see in us what we ask it to do.
March 25th is a celebration of faith and freedom. It is a celebration of responsibility. It is a celebration of hope. It reminds us that freedom is not just a right, it is a mission. It is not just an achievement, it is a daily exercise.
Just as the Virgin Mary cooperated with the divine will, so too are we called to cooperate with good, with truth, with justice.
Political freedom is undoubtedly valuable. But inner freedom is a blessing, it is the deepest revolution. Because no society can stand upright if its people are internally bound.
What does inner freedom mean? It means not being dominated by fear, envy, pettiness, selfishness. It means being able to choose good, solidarity, charity, spiritual greatness, even when it is difficult. To forgive. To unite, even when we disagree. The Virgin Mary was free internally. That is why she was able to say the big "yes". The fighters of 1821 were free internally. That is why they were able to overcome fear.
Because the greatest revolution is not on the battlefields. It is in the field of the heart. To free ourselves from cynicism. From indifference.
From the loss of meaning. Because the greatest slavery is not the shackles on the hands, but the shackles on the conscience. And when the heart is free, then the nation can remain free.
If then the Archangel's "Hail" was heard to Nazareth,
if then the banner of freedom was raised in the mountains of Greece,
Today the same call is addressed to us:
Let us not fear the light. Let us not compromise with the darkness.
To preserve our faith, our unity, our dignity.
March 25 is a mirror in which we are called to face ourselves. It teaches us that freedom is not a given, it is a daily exercise. It reminds us that before every external liberation, an internal liberation precedes. It also teaches us that God does not abolish the test, he transforms it. That the Cross is not the end, but the beginning of the Resurrection. That hope is not naivety, but strength.
And perhaps, the deepest message of the day is that each generation is called to give its own response. Just as the "Haile" was heard then and was answered with the "Genoito", just as the banner of freedom was raised then through faith and sacrifice,
So today, life calls us to decide.
If we keep faith alive, if we cultivate inner freedom, if we transmit to our children not only knowledge but also ethics, standards, faith, honesty and truth, then March 25 will not only be a holiday, it will be a way of life. And then our homeland will not be based only on the memory of the past, but on the living testimony of the present. Because true freedom begins in the heart. And when the heart is free, then the nation can remain free.
Let us therefore keep the light of the Annunciation in our hearts.
Let us honor the sacrifices of our ancestors not only with words, but with deeds.
Let's pass on to our children values that do not deteriorate,
Faith, Unity, Truth, Love.
