The tension at AUTH had started since noon on Friday, but in the evening the MAT again attacked with chemicals during the concert of Thanasis Papakonstantinou at AUTH.
After 12 at night, the police fired tear gas into the Campus, while the concert was in progress. The concert was organized as part of the 3rd Freedom Festival of Occupied Lands and Collectives, while the participants reached 5.000.
For their part, the police state that some threw stones at a MAT squad standing in the library, while the students' side speaks of a direct attack by the police force. The issue is that the atmosphere became suffocating in the concert area, which was interrupted while the participants came out and marched in Arch.
The attack with chemicals and stun grenades continued, as a result of which the ELAS aura intervened in the center of Thessaloniki.
The official police statement reads as follows:
"In the early morning hours today, Saturday September 17, 2022, a group of people with covered facial features, taking advantage of the presence of a gathered crowd during a music event - concert in an outdoor area of A.P.Th. (Grass of the School of Philosophy), was detached from it and moved suddenly, launching a fierce attack by throwing objects (stones) against police forces who were near the building of the Department of Agriculture, to protect the construction of the Library".
"The police forces, in order to repel the attack, repelled the attackers using appropriate means and tactics, who in order to avoid arrest integrated themselves into the people attending the event. The above-mentioned repulsion took place at a distance from the concert venue, while the police forces did not move against the people watching it and no chemicals were used by them in the concert venue."
