Tensions are rising in Latin America, as Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro declared that his country is on "maximum alert" and warned that, in the event of an attack by the United States, he would constitutionally declare a "democracy in arms."
His comments came at a news conference in Caracas as Washington is bolstering its presence in the Caribbean with the deployment of powerful naval forces, citing the need to combat Latin American drug cartels. Although the US has not hinted at a possible ground invasion, the deployment of thousands of troops to the region is causing deep concern.
The Venezuelan government responded by deploying troops to the coast and border with Colombia, while also calling on citizens to join militias, in an effort to show national unity in the face of American pressure.
This escalation brings tense US-Venezuela relations back to the fore and leaves open the question of whether the confrontation will remain at the level of statements or whether it will develop into a broader conflict in the Caribbean.
