I saw a very special play, staged in a completely cinematic way, at the Coronet theater. And even as "a film" almost in black and white, if one excludes the scream of a rainbow that appears revealingly on stage, on a cloth.
Stephen Belber's "Meeting" was directed by Giorgos Kimoulis, who plays the role of the great dancer, choreographer and dance teacher, who over the years "became" living in the theater!
The work, one could say, refers to loneliness, which is in danger of becoming loneliness – as it is said at the beginning of the work, but more here we are talking about the loneliness of the artist.
As stated in the work, the artist "pays talent for its conceit by doing what others do not". He is the one who "chases a career and gets lost, losing those who could love him." From what it seems, however, these thoughts that are made silently, are expressed in loud words only when the "meeting" with the past occurs.
Katerina Theohari and Vassilis Giakoumaros weave a story that brings the past into the present, making loneliness even stronger.
The dance teacher - now - lives in an abandoned theater, in Skini - and as he says, he doesn't feel very alone, because he envisions spectators in the seats of the square. The only connection to what is happening outside this abandoned theater is the television, which sometimes plays serials, soap operas, like those seen by people who usually have things a little more laid out in their lives.
An artist wants to isolate himself and at the same time offer – it's not a self-evident psychosynthesis, it's not an easy case – that's why an encounter with the past is not an easy case.
This is a show I highly recommend. The dramatic silence plays closely with the comic element, and the performances are naturally riveting. Giorgos Kimoulis is one of those actors who express a role so naturally that even the nervous system reacts: I was watching his face at the moment of the revelation of the secret: The twitches of the tic on his cheek are not something that someone can intentionally cause . It is the result of an Actor's serious inner journey.
