Tehran's standoff with Washington over the Strait of Hormuz was linked in mid-August to revelations about the difficult conditions aboard the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier. Iran called on the US to accept defeat, while reports described refueling problems and crew fatigue after a prolonged mission.
On August 15, Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Kazem Gharibabadi said that the passage through the Straits would be determined by Tehran. Responding to Donald Trump's statements about American control of the sea route, he called on Washington to abandon its illusions and recognize the reality of defeat, as he described it.
At the same time, attention turned to the effects of Iranian attacks on US facilities in Bahrain. According to a report by SKAI, citing the New York Times, damage to critical infrastructure hampered the operation of a key support hub for the US fleet.
The transfer of a significant part of the supply to Diego Garcia created greater distances and additional difficulties. The same report describes a support line of approximately 3.500 kilometers to the naval forces operating in the Gulf of Oman area. The consequences, according to the publication, were felt in the adequacy of supplies and the daily life of the crew.
Concerns about living conditions had reached the public debate in the US, with relatives of servicemen reporting problems with the ship's food and facilities. The American side, on the other hand, defended the continuation of the mission. The head of CENTCOM, Admiral Brad Cooper, visited the Lincoln and praised the resilience of the crew.
Behind the statements on both sides, the case highlighted the importance of resupply in a protracted military operation. Attacks on land facilities can strain the operations of ships located far from them, shifting some of the burden to the people serving at sea.
