Turkey strikes again in Armenia, evoking memories of the Ottoman Empire's massacre of Armenian citizens during World War I. Memories that should make the world, and especially you gathered, rise up for one reason only. Armenians have suffered from Turkey as we have suffered and are still suffering. Armenians are our brothers.
In this war between Armenia and Azerbaijan, Turkey is supporting the latter in an ironic attempt to project an image of a "brother Turkish nation". While we remain uninvolved and complacent with our "brothers" in the European Union, the Turks are trying to establish themselves as a strong regional power through their involvement in local conflicts. This is what he did in Syria, in Libya, and now in the Caucasus. How do they help the Azeris? They offer the air capabilities that the Azeris do not have, they facilitate the transport of mercenaries from the Syrian Islamic armed forces.
But why doesn't any Greek politician come out to shout out the ironic attitude of our neighbors? In the previous Armenia-Azerbaijan war, the Azeris were the losers, and the 1994 armistice put about 14% of the country under Armenian control, which the Azeris believed to be a historical injustice. Azerbaijanis have always believed that Armenia's occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh continued to be a violation of international law and therefore could not be recognized internationally. Does this remind you of something? If the answer is no, then you may need to leave the reality shows and become more concerned with the plans of the Turks to revive their former "greatness" and enslave their spineless enemies with the gauntlet.
Turkey has been illegally occupying a piece of our Cyprus for decades and shouts that this occupation is legal! Now, he supports Azerbaijan, which shouts that the occupation of Nagorno-Karabakh is illegal! So far Turkey has been acting undisturbed with Russia waiting to intervene once Turkey's support crosses "limits" and the European Union and the US warning. This situation makes many think what else they know to do besides warnings.
Did you know that Greek-Armenians voluntarily leave for the war? The Armenian diaspora in Greece invited their brothers and sisters to volunteer in the Armenian army to defend their homeland against Azerbaijan AND against Turkey. Within three days, more than 100 people signed. 10.000 people have been registered in America. And while Turkey has been actively involved in this confrontation, the only step we, their brothers, have taken was a statement condemning the loss of life and affirming our country's readiness to assist in de-escalation. A statement and nothing else.
How long will we let Turkey do what it wants undisturbed? How long will we listen to the "big" players like Germany who "forbid" us in sovereign states to impose sanctions on the invaders? Why should we continue to toe the line of Germany when we and our brothers have to suffer the consequences of the behavior of Turkey and her sultan who rightly believes he can do whatever he wants with no repercussions?
Our relations with Armenia are brotherly. We are both ancient peoples who coexisted for centuries. The Armenian and Greek languages share a common ancestor. Greece was one of the first countries to recognize the independence of Armenia in 1991, the Armenian Genocide, as well as one of the few countries to criminalize denial of the Armenian Genocide. After Russia, we are one of the most important military partners of Armenia with Armenian officers being trained in Greek military schools.
Once again, however, Turkey defeats our brothers, supporting their enemies, while we remain only in bittersweet words so as not to anger the Sultan...
