The cyclone Erin, the first of this season in the Atlantic, is developing into one of the strongest phenomena in recent years. In just 24 hours, it was upgraded from a tropical storm to Category 5, reaching the highest levels of the Saffir–Simpson scale.
With winds that touch the 240 km / h, Erin is causing great concern in the Caribbean regions, as its trajectory appears to threaten the Lesser Antilles, the Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico – areas that have been hard-hit by devastating hurricanes in the past, such as Maria in 2017.
In accordance with National Hurricane Center (NHC) of the US, on Saturday night Erin was located about 235 kilometers northeast of Puerto Rico, heading towards the Bahamas, where it is expected to approach Sunday night. Although early estimates indicate it will stay away from the east coast of the United States, experts are warning of big waves which may reach as far as North Carolina.
Η US Weather Service (NWS) predicts an intense hurricane season this year, with 13 to 18 tropical storms, of which 5 to 9 are expected to develop into hurricanes. Erin's explosive strengthening to Category 5 is a clear warning of the power and unpredictable nature of this season.
The image of the phenomenon has provoked strong reactions and comments on social networks. Users and analysts are talking about a "historical record" in the speed of a storm's development, while meteorologists are talking about an "almost supernatural" development. Some even admit that "this storm seems to defy the laws of thermodynamics."
Everyone is now looking ahead to the next few hours, hoping that Erin will not directly hit populated areas and that its fury will be limited to the ocean.
