Angelos Pavlidis, who has won several medals in the shot put in the past, competed in the Pan-Swedish Under-23 Games and won the silver medal, confirming once again his steady progress in the field of athletics.
Speaking to Greek news and radio in Florida, he refers to his new success, his goals for the future, his experience with the Swedish National Team, but also his daily life as an athlete and coach.
New success: silver medal in the U23 category. How do you feel?
Okay, pretty good. I wouldn't say I'm happy with my result, not at all, because I was in really good shape. But okay, a medal is a medal. I'm happy with the medal.
Was it your first time competing in the U23s?
Yes, it's the first time.
How difficult was the race?
I wouldn't say it was very difficult. The competition wasn't great, because some athletes are in America. There were about eight of us and I considered third place pretty safe.
How was your performance?
I think I shot 15,47, if I remember correctly, with the new 7,26 kg bullet.
Are you satisfied with this performance?
No, because I've thrown 16,18. Last year with the six-pounder I threw 17,18.
So you think you have room for improvement?
Yes, I have other measures in mind.
What is your goal for this year?
I would say at least 16,50 with the seven-kilogram shot put. Also a medal at the Pan-Swedish U23 and a place in the final at the Pan-Swedish men's.
What has your coach told you?
That in practice I make better shots and I have to find what I do in practice and in the game. It's a matter of time and practice.
How are training sessions with the National Team compared to your team in Malmö?
We meet the best in Sweden and train together. There are other coaches who work with mine and give us advice. It's good to have a second set of eyes.
Have you played for the Swedish National Team?
Yes, last year in Nurtsala in Sweden.
Would you like to compete in European or world championships with the Swedish National Team?
It's something I'm thinking about. Because I live and compete here, it's easier to compete with the Swedish National Team.
How do you combine training, work and personal life?
I'm not studying at the moment. Last year I got my studenten certificate and I'm taking a break. I work at a school as a coach and at a daycare center. On the weekends I also have a group that I coach in shot put and discus. After the summer I'll see what I'll do.
How many years have you been involved in athletics?
Six years.
How many medals have you won?
In the Pan-Swedish ones, about seven. In total, maybe 25 to 30.
How did your family react to your new success?
They were very happy. They know that I can perform better and they support me to continue.
As a coach, what advice do you give to your athletes?
Consistency in training. And not dwelling on one bad effort or one bad week.
What message would you give to young people who want to get involved in sports?
They should do it 100%. Sports are something really nice, they get you out of your daily routine, you meet new people and you have a good time.
When are your next matches?
The indoor season is over. I might do a little race in April to start. The regular season starts in May.
What races do you plan to participate in?
The main goals are the U23 and men's Pan-Swedish Championships. Maybe I'll also participate in competitions in Denmark or Sweden, like in Gothenburg. I'll decide when the season starts.
