According to the recent data from both the National Bank study and the findings from the major tour operators, it seems that Greece will have a fairly large increase in its tourist traffic this year.
The first two months of 2024 with an increase of almost 35% compared to 2023, shows that tourism is on the rise at the same time as the tourist season is lengthening in months that used to be quite low.
It seems that the Ministry of Tourism, together with the local government, have taken important steps with an emphasis on special forms of tourism and the simplification of accommodation licensing procedures as well as with the updating of the Organization for the Management and Promotion of Destinations.
This practically means that the organization will promote areas that have been affected by recent natural disasters to recover and re-use.
The utilization of resources from the Recovery Fund for the development of special forms such as winter/mountain tourism, marine/diving tourism, wellness, agritourism and culinary tourism are sectors that can be comfortably supported by our country if and as long as no money wasted on looks…
Of course, since the heavy industry of the country is tourism, special emphasis should be given and the utilization of the education and specialization structures, because until now they are lame compared to those of other countries.
It must be understood in the relevant ministries that the training and education of young people in correct, sustainable and technologically high level schools are the property of the country for advertising, operation and high standard services.
There is, however, a black spot regarding the requested levies by the representatives of the local government regarding the increase of the tourist tax or other levies on the turnover of the hotels. Increasing taxes without paying them back or investing in tourism itself to improve its operation is unprofitable.
In conclusion, there are still two or three issues that need to be implemented immediately, so that we can talk about big steps forward as well as global recognition.
We are doing well and may it continue like this....
