The Sykias Hydroelectric Project is an important infrastructure project that began in 1996 in the area of Achelou, at the point of convergence with the Koumbourgianitiko River, on the borders of the prefectures of Karditsa and Arta. It consists of the Sykias dam and two hydroelectric plants, and was budgeted at 185 million euros, with an additional 150 million euros needed to complete the dam.
Although the project is incomplete and significant sums have been spent, its progress has been hampered by legal entanglements and public backlash. The contract has been submitted to the Audit Court for approval, while the installation of the contractor is expected in April. The project includes measures for construction safety and flood protection.
This infrastructure, despite its challenges, is intended to contribute to strengthening energy self-sufficiency and improving the hydrological management of the region, offering significant benefits to the local economy and the environment.
