The FBI warned New Jersey's Jewish community and synagogues that, as it states, "reliable sources report a widespread threat" that could cause serious problems.
This laconic announcement was made by the authorities via Twitter, without giving more information at the moment: “At this time we ask that you take all security measures to protect the community and your facilities. We will release more information as soon as possible. Stay alert. In case of emergency, call the police."
The threat was vague, according to the Newark FBI office, which is why it issued this statement.
This post was published after authorities identified an online threat targeting synagogues in New Jersey, synagogues in general and not specific ones, as announced by the FBI.
It is not the first time that threats and public warnings have been issued against Jewish institutions, and they have been made from time to time by various groups, even by Christian or Islamic groups. Often the alarms are false, but there have also been cases of killer strikes.
New Jersey Mayor Steven Fulop said police would guard the seven synagogues while adding foot patrols.
For his part, Rep. Josh Gottheimer, a Democrat in New Jersey, said he was both concerned and outraged by the direct threat against Jews. “I am deeply concerned and outraged by today's notice from the FBI. This happens after years anti-Semitic comments from public figures," he added, referring to Kanye West's recent comments and a social media post shared by his star NBA Kyrie Irving.
The FBI has not released any information clarifying the source of the threat that has caused unrest in New Jersey.
