The Greek Revolution 1821 with the heroic confrontation of the conquering fury of the Ottomans are a milestone in the history of Europe. "Here in the Greek soil, the haunted and sacred, / where the same soil still remains from ancient times, /…" our poet Kostis Palamas saw "the great victory, the eternal victory" the victory of Greece .
And this same country, after constant occupations and struggles for life, stood up and is now a member of the European Union. The lyrics of Nikiforos Vrettakos in 1945 are also characteristic: "Do not laugh at your misery and you will fall asleep because new clouds have flattened the homeland! "Black twisted clouds hang like pencils over our houses, over the graves of our children!" And the clouds, unfortunately, still exist today "twisted"!
The 200th anniversary has already sparked international interest. The Revolution and the subsequent position of Greece in the world are the subject of international scientific interest. It is impressive that the Hellenic Foundation for Culture has undertaken the publication of an English dictionary (A Critical Dictionary) for the Greek Revolution in collaboration with Harvard University Press. 21 are considered by scholars to be myths.
Besides, the negative reaction of the Church at the beginning to the ideas of the Revolution, which she considered dogmas originating from Esperia, as well as her later supportive stance for the same Revolution, but also the transformation of the heroic war into a civil war, leave many questions that seek answers from expert scientists. The past, present and future of this people of "gullible and always betrayed" according to our national poet, concerns humanity perhaps more than the Greeks themselves.
The celebration of such an anniversary draws the interest of Europeans and not only politicians in our country with definitely positive consequences, as had happened in France in 1989 for the 200 years since the French Revolution.
But apart from the scientific research that will restore the truth about the Greek Revolution, as well as the celebration of the anniversary, it is the duty of all of us Greek citizens and politicians, I believe, to try with our mentality, behavior and actions to restore normalcy. in our country, 200 years after the Revolution.
We need a spiritual awakening. Our age, despite the contrary declarations, is conventional and, as it seems, a new Humanism is now needed, tolerant of multiculturalism and new data, I would dare to say that we need a new Revolution. If we take even a few steps in this direction, we will have responded in the best way to our historic anniversary.
