The reason for this article was interviews with some who ignore or ignore the real role of the UN and criticize it by arguing that "if the UN is not fixed, it should be dissolved" etc.
I will try, as epigrammatically as I can, to answer without dogmatism, but in the context of a constructive dialogue:
- The UN is not a superstate. It is whatever its Member States (193 today) want it to be, especially the 5 Permanent Members of the Security Council, the 5 Powers (France, UK, USA, China, Russia) who by the infamous Right of the Veto, the well-known VETO, impose their will and, mutatis mutandis, control the rest. And when their interests converge, then there are positive results for the Organization. If not, the familiar dramas and tragedies follow. Why, then, do they not repeal the veto, which has caused so much trouble? (OT in the 80s published an article of mine on the repeal of the Veto). Unfortunately the Great Powers want to monopolize power in the world ("Power corrupts"), reviving neo-imperialist tactics, and woe to those who resist! Wars! And what about Climate Change (trade) et al. problems about which the Powerful are indifferent and divide? Is the UN to blame? No, everyone knows who the CULprits are: The dark warring circles, the "Lords of the Rings", who cultivate and perpetuate the CULTURE OF VIOLENCE with the media, etc., dividing the UN Member States causing new Babels and Armageddons. And I am responding to the comment about the dissolution of the UN.
- If the UN dissolves, as happened with the UN, which rejected the groundbreaking Kellogg-Briand proposal for the prohibition of war in general, because in the meantime the circuits of production and sale of weapons systems had become a state within a state and we saw what followed, they will happen the following tragedies:
1) His Peacekeeping Forces-Blue Helmets (more than a hundred thousand members) operating in various countries facing civil wars, foreign occupation troops, etc. will be disbanded. and prevent the worst, as is happening in the Republic of Cyprus etc. It should be noted that these Forces have sacrificed more than 3 thousand. their executives (among them a Greek!) defending peace far from their homeland, and have been repeatedly honored with the Nobel Peace Prize! So if they dissolve, chaos will follow in the above countries.
2) Its dozens of important Organizations will be disbanded, among them the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) with very valuable work in Greece as well, UNICEF (unfortunately in our country the National Committee had an ignominious end), the Food and Agriculture Organization ( FAO), the Development Program (UNDP), which worked for many years also in Greece with beneficial results, the Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the Environment Program (UNEP) with also important work in Greece, the Atomic Energy Organization (IAEA) etc., which have provided valuable work in many mainly developing countries. And these Organizations employ over a hundred thousand. staff! What if they close? Tragedy! However, if these Organizations had been properly utilized they would have solved all the problems facing humanity at their root, and not millions of people dying of hunger every year, billions of illiterates, about 85 million refugees, billions of unemployed, billions of victims epidemic diseases, criminal acts, etc. tragedies, which plague the world which has devolved into a jungle because that is what the inhuman war-mongering profit circles want, which, as was revealed in the 60s at the famous IEDES in Paris, when above Organizations sent their executives to developing (underdeveloped at the time) countries to study there problems of poverty etc., some unconsciously informed them aforementioned circuits for cases of ethnic or religious minorities and other related serious divisive problems, then they would send their agents, buy off some, arm them and start the conflicts, etc. in which they invested their inhuman, obscene funds.
3) But there is also the other "science fiction" version, if the UN dissolves, it will be succeeded by the infamous NATO, which was created under the auspices of the UN to represent it regionally, but not to replace it as it has been trying to do for the last few years and we see the tragedies that happened (disaster of Yugoslavia) and are happening (Ukraine). Let's hope that prudence, logic and resistance prevail because otherwise humanity is in serious danger!
Now, how to "fix" this "bad boy", the UN, let us consider some important facts that may enlighten us:
1) The late General Dag Hammerskjold, was the only one who disagreed with the two Superpowers ESR and USA about the war in Congo and he went to achieve peace himself, but he was killed in an airplane "accident". However, he remained in History! What did the next ones do and what are they doing? Who influences them? Also, why, 64 years on, has there not been a substantial investigation into the real causes of the "accident"? 2) Contradictions, good and bad, also coexist in the UN. How is it justified, later on, for a former Nazi officer to be elected as the head of the UN? Is it the fault of the UN, all the Member States, its executives, or only some powerful circles that want to control the DGs to serve their immoral interests? And after they used him they revealed his past! The conclusions are reasonable. 3) General Boutros Boutros-Ghali publishes the famous Agenda for Peace, which if it had been implemented there would be no war conflicts, etc. They did not renew his term! Is it the fault of the UN, all its Member States, its officials, etc., or only some states controlled, as we said, by warmongering circles? 4) In 1972 at an international conference, the late Eupatridis American Senator William Fulbright, rang the bell by saying something radical, that small and medium-sized states should not treat powerful states with a spirit of servitude, but unite, cooperate and impose respect for the powerful in the UN! Has anything like this happened since then? Unfortunately not and we see the tragic results! Also, important Decades have been established, e.g. three Decades for Development, three Decades for Disarmament, two Decades for Eradication of Poverty, Decade for Cultural Development, etc. What have governments done to harness them? Or does the unthinkable argument hold that all these activities are simply for communal consumption and distraction?
Regarding our country, e.g. voted in the General Assembly etc. always in favor of the law or abstained etc. because of the "advice-orders" of powerful "allies"? And it continues with regard to vital national issues (N. Epirus, Cypriot, Skopje, Turkish neo-imperialism, etc.). Is the UN to blame? Of course not! It is the fault of the governments here that operated with a spirit of subservience to the ungrateful powerful "allies". For B. Epirus is the fault of the government at the time, which retreated due to the reaction of the US counterpart and did not appeal to the UN. For the Cyprus issue, the Junta et al. are essentially responsible. co-responsible "allies". And whose fault is it that Turkey for FIFTY YEARS still owns a large part of the Republic of Cyprus in violation of dozens of UN resolutions, International Law, etc., as well as violations of Greece's national air and sea space, UNCLOS regarding the Continental Shelf, EEZ etc.? The governments of Greece and the Republic of Cyprus are responsible, showing unacceptable compromise within the framework of the UN, EU and NATO. The shameful and treacherous "Prespa agreement" is responsible for Skopje. And for Turkey's neo-imperialism, also the unacceptable policy of compromise and subservience of Greek governments with co-responsible powerful "allies". Under these circumstances, what should the UN do that is being ignored and undermined? Disband him and replace him with NATO so that we can go to World War II to satisfy the war-loving, bloodthirsty draculas - ORK.
Also, the government, the opposition, the media, etc. reacted. when the UN Office in Athens, covering Greece, Cyprus, Israel, (and Turkey before its illegal invasion of Cyprus) was closed at the backdoor request of Turkey with the cooperation of a local political leader and the US and the same was later done with the wretched Plan Anan? Did anyone in authority react when an unrelated person without a degree took over the leadership of the UN Office? Did someone react when the Ministry of Foreign Affairs downgraded the OHE Day ceremony to the Constitution assigning an official and not a Minister, Deputy Minister or Secretary General to testify Stefano to the Unknown, and the UN Headquarters was displeased? And why is the previously well-known Hellenic Association of the United Nations almost non-existent, with the late, internationally renowned Professor Spyros Kalogeropoulos-Stratis as President, and then the also late Secretary General of the Ministry of Health, Meropi Violaki? Have the governments generally dealt with the many dozens of NGOs, many of which operate parasitically as party crutches, and are subsidized without providing substantial work? Leaders, NGOs etc. reacted positively. when during the International Year of Peace it was proposed by the UN to abolish all forms of violence in the media etc.? And why did the Peace Movement "extinguish" under the auspices of the UN? Finally, why is there no interest from political leaders, the media, etc. for viewing important publications about the UN? Political and social indolence and inaction that goes back to civil periods or to Periander's "following the preeminent"?
Therefore, they are all jointly responsible and indifference and apathy is the worst Counselor! As is happening now with the tragic war conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza. And it is not only the indifference of political leaders, but also of religious, NGOs, etc. who go blind and over a million PEOPLE, among them many thousands of women and children, have been killed as if they were flies. Speaking of religious leaders, the case of the Temple in Lucerne, where with artificial intelligence "Christ appears and confesses" etc. Christians, it reminds us of the Inquisition and the Twelvers, revealing both the modern religious "parody" and the return to a new Middle Ages. And the religious leaders are responsible for what people have lost in the face of the immoral profits of inhumane gangs. So is it the fault of the UN or the dark, profit-making circles that weaken it, undermine it and use it for their own exclusive interests? And what are the leaders in general and the people doing to end these tragedies? NOTHING! It is disappointing that even "educated" people ignore the UN Charter, this political "Gospel" as well as the UN Universal Declaration of Human Rights, the social "Gospel". And then they ask ironically: "Which UN, where is the UN?" Perhaps, beyond the wise exhortation of Fulbright, a peaceful revolution of peaceful and democratically minded people will provide the solution.
Let us all reflect and look within ourselves and around us and ask ourselves what we have done and what we can do for this Universal Political "Temple", where the "gods" work differently with negative results, but when united with positive ones, and let us do what is necessary for his strengthening to carry out the precious universal pacific etc. his work!
