The Nosside International Poetry Prize – named after Nossida, a 3rd century poet. BC, from the ancient Greek colony of the Epizephyrian Locrons – founded in 1983, in collaboration with the Centro Studi Bosio in Rigio, Calabria, and is a partner of the Unesco World Poetry Directory network.
The Nosside International Poetry Competition is the result of a cultural strategy which focuses on two pillars.
On the one hand, in multilingualism, since the official languages of the Competition are five (Italian, English, Spanish, French and Portuguese), on the other hand, in the acceptance and equality of all languages of the world, whether they are national, idioms, dialects or native languages.
The Nosside Award is not limited to the most popular languages. It uses them as bridges, but also as communicating vessels so that the languages of minorities, dialects and indigenous peoples can emerge, transmit and even "globalize" the knowledge of cultural and communicative treasures that less widespread languages reflect. Thus, poetry outside official languages is of course subject to translation, but also to the source language.
A timeless cross-linguistic imprint, the anthology, in print and electronic form, published every year, hosts the prize-winning poems and circulates on five continents.
The result of this cultural range of the competition and its transparency, in terms of the selection of prize-winning poets, is the constant increase in the number of participants and the number of languages. In the 37 competitions that have taken place, poets from 102 countries have participated, and the languages of writing exceeded 140.
ENSURING THE LANGUAGE DIVERSITY OF THE PLANET is therefore the passport of the Nosside poetry competition. Its ever-widening spread confirms how important it is for different languages to meet on an equal footing, and how much widespread languages owe to the conceptual universe of even smaller, in terms of the number of users, languages.
The Nosside poetry competition therefore in fact supports a reverse globalization, a globalization which strengthens, protects and fortifies the linguistic diversity on planet Earth, before it disappears, simultaneously giving rise to different forms of poetic expression: Written Poetry, Video Poetry and Poetry Set to Music. The organization guarantees equality to all contestants, without discrimination as to language, origin, race, religion or age. It goes without saying that the Jury receives the entries of the contestants by number, and not by the name of the candidate.
The founder and president of the Competition is Pasquale Amato, retired professor of European History at the University of Messina. The Nosside Prize is, obviously, the result of a team effort of many contributors, all those who embraced and embrace Professor Amato's vision, people who consider the Nosside Poetry Competition as a huge cultural and linguistic workshop. The soul of this workshop is the Bosio Study Center in Rigio Calabria (Partner of the Unesco World Poetry Directory network for Cultural Diversity), a center supported by a network of Accredited Representatives, Partners and Volunteers in various parts of the world, with the award-winning female poets / the award-winning poets and the members of the International Jury to prevail among equals.
Along with Professor Amato's vision are the poets themselves, as well as their translators, who, through translation, break the boundaries of the written language of the poetic discourse, and through the bridge of the official languages of the competition, enable the poetic reason to be read by more readers.
Nosside's logo is a work of the Rigio-born futurist sculptor and painter Umberto Boccioni. The organizers are rightly proud of the precious silver re-creation of the Boccioni logo, which is crafted each year by the goldsmith Gerardo Sacco, a native of the ancient Greek colony of Croton, for the winner of the competition.
