Doral Police Chief Edwin Lopez has been selected as the new chief of the Miami Police Department, after 28 years of service in law enforcement.
Edwin Lopez, currently the chief of the Doral Police Department, is expected to take over as the new chief of the Miami Police Department, according to an announcement by Miami Mayor Eileen Higgins and City Manager James Reyes.
Lopez's selection comes at a time when neighborhood safety and trust between the police and the local community remain key priorities for the city.
In her statement, Mayor Higgins emphasized that Miami is considered one of the safest major cities in the United States and that the city government's goal is to maintain this level of safety through supporting police officers, strengthening relationships with citizens, and a constant presence in neighborhoods.
Edwin Lopez has 28 years of experience in law enforcement. He has served as the Doral Police Chief since 2023, and previously had a 25-year career with the Miami-Dade School Police Department. He served the last four years of his tenure there as the unit's chief.
City Manager James Reyes described Lopez as an officer with a strong leadership record, commitment to transparency and a proven track record in community policing. He noted that the trust he has earned in the communities where he has served is an important element in his new assignment in Miami.
Lopez will officially assume his new duties later this year, following the departure of current Miami Police Chief Manuel Morales, who is set to retire.
Doral Mayor Christi Fraga also expressed particularly warm words for Lopez, saying that he was a leader with integrity who substantially strengthened the city's police department and helped create a solid foundation for the future.
Edwin Lopez's move from Doral to Miami is considered a significant development for local policing in South Florida, as he takes on a city with increased needs, a multicultural population and ever-growing public safety challenges.
