Holy Apostles of Petria
Overlooking the Aegean Sea and the rocky island of Gamila, the small port of Agioi Apostoloi has become a holiday destination in recent years, offering several alternatives for accommodation and entertainment.
The port is also known as Petries, from the homonymous village located a short distance. The area has the reputation of a good fishing spot, which is confirmed by the above in its picturesque taverns where you can taste fresh fish.
The Mediterranean settlements around Agios Apostolos have a tradition in agriculture, so do not forget to try and buy local products, such as wine, curcumin (handmade pasta), trachana and macaroons.
Harmoniously combining the blue of the Aegean with the rural landscape, the ancient settlements and the medieval castles with the natural treasures of the wetland of Lake Dystos, the area offers many different vacation options.
Pirate base
According to popular tradition, the village of Petries and Agioi Apostoloi were a stronghold of pirates during the Frankish period, as the favorable location of the port and the bays formed in the surrounding area is an ideal natural refuge. The modern history of the settlement of Agioi Apostoloi begins in 1830, when Petriot fishermen built the first houses and moved by the sea.
Where blue "ties" with green
The villages around Agios Apostolos have been based on the rural economy for centuries. Starting from the picturesque Petries, with the stone houses, do not forget to walk on the path with the old watermills.
Nearby is the village of Krieza, home of the hero of the Greek Revolution Nikolaos Kriezotis. In Zarakes, admire the old settlement, called Mahalas, where Greek and foreign nature lovers have been trying for the last years to restore the old stone houses.
South of Lake Dystos is the homonymous village, which is built near the ancient woodland town, while at the foot of Kakari hill is the village of Koutoumoula with the tower of the same name.
In the village of Velos (or Velousia) visit the ruins of the Mycenaean tomb, while at 2 km from Lepoura admire the panoramic view to the valley from Magoula.
