A man convicted of child sexual abuse is no longer in the United States, following actions by President Donald J. Trump and his administration.
According to the White House announcement, the Trump administration proceeded with his deportation, despite the efforts of Minnesota Governor Tim Walz and the state's Attorney General, Keith Ellison, to protect him through a pardon in the so-called "sanctuary state."
Laotian national Tou Lou Wang was convicted of repeatedly sexually abusing a 10-year-old girl in Minnesota. According to the White House statement, he called his actions a “trivial matter” and attributed it to “cultural norms” in other countries. An immigration judge had ordered his removal from the United States since 2006.
The White House maintains that the pardon by Walz and Ellison was intended to prevent his impending deportation.
However, the federal government did not consider the pardon to have overturned or nullified the immigration process. Secretary of State Marco Rubio revoked Wang's lawful permanent resident status, and the Department of Homeland Security immediately proceeded to deport him.
In its statement, the White House sharply criticizes Minnesota Democratic officials, accusing them of putting the protection of a convicted foreign national above the safety of American citizens.
The Trump administration says it will continue to identify, arrest, and remove illegal immigrants convicted of serious crimes against children, regardless of state officials' interventions.
