The issue of the use of correct terminology by MEPs in relation to the Cyprus problem was raised by MEP Costas Mavridis (DIKO – S&D) to the President-in-Office at the end of the debate on the resolution on women who suffered sexual violence during the Turkish invasion. Mr. Mavridis’ intervention was raised as a procedural request to correct incorrect references made during the said debate.

This is his intervention:

"Madam President,

Thank you for giving me the opportunity to raise a point of order. I believe that the wording (verbal) used by some of my colleagues, but in good faith and possibly by the interpretation, was not correct. In Cyprus there is no conflict between Greece and Turkey. This is an invasion by Turkey against the Republic of Cyprus. And I would also like to clarify that there is no such conflict in Cyprus between the two communities. This is the Turkish invasion and the continued occupation of European Union territory by Turkey in Cyprus.”
