The exploitation of energy deposits in the Eastern Mediterranean for the EU's energy security, on the occasion of the new discoveries in the Cyprus Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), was highlighted by MEP Costas Mavridis (DIKO – S&D) in his speech at the plenary session of the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
In his speech, Mr. Mavridis stated:
"New discoveries in the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus increase the potential of the energy deposits of the Eastern Mediterranean. We have repeatedly argued from this platform that these deposits, as domestic sources of energy for the EU, provide a unique advantage in our effort to become independent from third parties and for the EU's energy security, which we should exploit."
The Cypriot MEP then referred to Turkey's role as a violator of International Law and an expansionist, but EU officials are leaving the door open for a role in Eurodefense, noting:
"Defense of International Law is required against the expansionist Turkey, which is obstructing the legitimate actions of the Republic of Cyprus as well as Greece. Just yesterday, the Turkish Foreign Minister launched new threats of war against EU states. However, in the Eastern Mediterranean, our vital European interests and our values are being judged. And the stance of each of us reveals who believes in these values and who is simply pretending."
