A NEW CHAPTER OF DISCOVERY:
Today, President Donald J. Trump signed an Executive Order launching Mission Genesis, a new national effort to harness artificial intelligence (AI) to transform the way scientific research is conducted and accelerate the pace of scientific discovery.
The Genesis Mission tasks the Secretary of Energy with harnessing our National Laboratories, uniting America's brightest minds, most powerful computers, and the nation's vast scientific data into a single collaborative research system.
The Decree directs the Ministry of Energy to create a "closed-loop" AI experimentation platform, which will integrate the country's world-class supercomputers and unique data to create scientific foundation models and operate robotic laboratories.
The Order directs the Assistant to the President for Science and Technology (APST) to coordinate the national initiative and the integration of data and infrastructure across the federal government.
The Secretary of Energy, APST, and the Special Advisor on AI & Crypto will collaborate with academia and private sector innovators to support and enhance the Genesis Mission.
The priorities include the greatest scientific challenges of our time, which can dramatically improve our country's national, economic and health security, such as:
- biotechnology,
- critical materials,
- nuclear fission and fusion energy,
- space exploration,
- quantum information science,
- semiconductors and microelectronics.
USING AI FOR NATIONAL SECURITY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT:
With Mission Genesis, the Trump Administration intends to dramatically expand the productivity and impact of federal research and development within a decade.
Although research budgets have skyrocketed since the 1990s, scientific progress has slowed, new drug approvals have declined, and more researchers are needed to achieve the same results.
The use of AI as a scientific tool will revolutionize the way scientific research is conducted.
For example, AI technologies can:
- create models of protein structures and new materials,
- to design and analyze experiments,
- to gather and produce new data faster and more efficiently.
Research that once required years can now be completed in weeks or months.
To do this, AI needs vast amounts of organized, high-quality data and significant computing power.
This data and computing technology already exists at the Department of Energy's National Laboratories.
With Mission Genesis, the Trump Administration is bringing the power of AI to the existing research ecosystem of federal agencies and creating a platform for collaboration with the private sector for discoveries that are currently considered impossible, ensuring that America wins and stays ahead in the artificial intelligence race.
ENHANCING AMERICAN LEADERSHIP IN AI:
President Trump continues to prioritize America's global dominance in artificial intelligence, paving the way for a new golden age of human creativity, economic competitiveness, and national security.
- In January, he signed an Executive Order to reverse the Biden Administration's harmful AI policies and strengthen America's global leadership in AI.
- In April, he signed an Executive Order to promote AI education for America's youth.
- In July, he signed Executive Orders to prevent “woke AI” in the federal government and promote the export of integrated American AI technologies.
- In July, he announced America's AI Action Plan, with nearly a hundred federal actions to accelerate American AI innovation, build AI infrastructure domestically, and lead in international diplomacy and security.
The AI Action Plan includes policies for investing in AI for science, such as creating world-class datasets.
In September, the President signed an Executive Order to leverage AI in the discovery of treatments for childhood cancer, through the Childhood Cancer Data Initiative, which he had established in 2019.
