Starting next summer, children as young as 13 will be able to be imprisoned.

– In order to protect others, there must be the possibility of imprisonment, said the chairman of the justice committee, Henrik Vinge (SD).
The government had already decided that children who had previously been sentenced to reformatory measures for serious crimes could now be sentenced to imprisonment.
The convicted will be placed in special prisons together with other minors up to 17 years old.
With the reduction of the criminal liability threshold, the new prisons will also house children as young as 13 years old.
– It is important to strengthen the rehabilitation of victims, protect society and help children abandon the criminal path, said Justice Minister Gunnar Strömer (M) in a press release.
– When 13-14 year olds run around with automatic weapons, society must react with all its strength. In order to protect others, there must be the possibility of imprisoning them, said the chairman of the justice committee, Henrik Vinge (SD).
In total, there will be six new detention units for boys and two for girls. These units will be created in existing prisons, such as Österåker, Rosersberg and Kumla.
