The answer
The issuance or renewal of a Greek passport in the United States is carried out through the Greek consular authority responsible for the state in which the interested party resides.
For residents of New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and Pennsylvania, the Consulate General of Greece in New York is responsible.
Before the process begins, something very important must be clarified: a Greek passport can only be issued to a Greek citizen. Greek origin alone is not enough. The interested party must be registered in a Greek municipality's municipal registry, as this registration constitutes official proof of Greek citizenship.
If someone is of Greek origin, but has not yet completed the recognition of Greek citizenship and registration in the civil registry, they must first contact the Citizenship and Registry Department of the competent consular authority. Only after completing this procedure can they request a Greek passport.
First step: Book your appointment online
The application cannot be submitted by post nor can it be completed exclusively online. A personal presence at the competent Greek consulate is required, because the passport is biometric and the application is signed in the presence of the consular officer.

What procedures can be done electronically?
Although the application for the issuance or renewal of a Greek passport requires a personal presence at the competent Greek consular authority, several relevant procedures can now be carried out online.
The interested party can book their appointment online and be informed about the necessary supporting documents, the photo specifications and the applicable fees from the official website of the Passport Directorate.

What supporting documents are required?
The application is completed electronically by the consular officer during the appointment. The applicant checks his/her details and signs the application at the consulate.
The previous Greek passport is required, if any. Upon renewal, the old passport remains with the holder until the new one is received. At that time, it is surrendered for cancellation.
A recent color photograph, no older than one month, with dimensions of 4 by 6 centimeters or about 1,6 by 2,3 inches. The photo must meet strict technical specifications, have a light background, and the face must be looking directly into the lens. A US passport photo should not automatically be considered suitable because it has different dimensions.
The applicant must also present a Greek police ID card or a recent certificate of registration in the civil registry. If a permanent resident abroad does not have a Greek ID card, the consular authority may request a birth or marital status certificate from the competent Greek municipality.
Because the rules for accepting old Greek IDs have been updated, it is appropriate for the interested party to confirm before the appointment that their ID is accepted.
Men aged 19 to 45 may be required to provide additional certificates regarding their military service status. For this reason, they should contact the relevant military service department of the consulate in advance.
How much;
The fee for a ten-year passport for people over 14 years old corresponds to 80 euroFor children up to 14 years old, the passport is valid for three years and the fee corresponds to 71 euro.
In the United States, payment is made in dollars, based on the current consular exchange rate. The official notice states that payment is made in cash. Since the dollar amount is subject to change, it must be confirmed prior to the appointment.
How long does it take?
Greek passports are not printed at United States consulates. Applications and supporting documents are sent via a secure process to Greece, where the passport is issued by the Greek Police. It is then returned to the competent consular authority.
Estimated completion time is approximately four to five weeks, without this being a guaranteed deadline. Renewal can be requested up to twelve months before the expiry of the existing passport.
The collection is done in person or by a legally authorized person, with the required proof of identity and the duly validated authorization. Upon receipt of the new passport, the previous one is surrendered for cancellation.
What happens in case of loss or theft?
The loss or theft of a Greek passport must be reported immediately to both the local American police and the nearest Greek consular authority.
An investigation into the circumstances of the incident will follow and a new passport will not be automatically issued. For this reason, this process may take longer than a regular renewal.
