Apocalyptic article by Shay Gal – Israeli geopolitical and public diplomacy analyst
The Turkish occupation of the northern part of Cyprus does not only concern Greece and the Republic of Cyprus. According to Israeli strategic analyst Shay Gal, it is a subtle but direct threat to Israel itself and the stability of the Eastern Mediterranean.
The Turkish militarization of the occupied territories
In his revealing article, Gal describes a worrying network of Turkish influence in northern Cyprus, where Bayraktar and Akinci drones, SIGINT systems, ballistic missiles, as well as operations centers for terrorist organizations such as Hamas and Iran's Quds Force are installed.
The entire region operates as an uncontrolled "gray territory", with shell companies, money laundering, surveillance operations and parastatal influence, under the full tolerance and cooperation of Turkey.
Israel cannot remain uninvolved
Gal directly proposes a contingency operational plan for the liberation of the northern part of Cyprus. Israel, in coordination with Greece and the Republic of Cyprus, should prepare the operation codenamed "Poseidon's Wrath".
This business, as described:
- It would neutralize Turkish reinforcement capabilities from the mainland.
- It would destroy air defense and intelligence systems.
- It would remove Turkish forces from northern Cyprus.
- It would restore the internationally recognized sovereignty of the Republic of Cyprus.
The name of the operation refers to Poseidon, god of the sea, and symbolizes Israel's maritime sovereignty and determination to safeguard critical assets and security corridors.
Gal clarifies that Israel does not seek conflict, but it must be ready. It reminds us that the once unthinkable operation against Iran's nuclear infrastructure was finally carried out, sending a message to Turkey, which is building the dangerous Akkuyu nuclear plant.
Awakening of Athens and Nicosia – Pro-Turkish naivety
Gal's article is simultaneously a resounding slap in the face to the "appeasing" politicians and analysts in Athens and Nicosia, who continue to support the pro-Turkish Bizonal Bicommunal Federation. A "solution" that, according to the analyst, would also place the free areas under Ankara's control.
Gal does not hesitate to criticize the attitude of those who still insist on promoting a plan devised by Henry Kissinger to reward Turkey after the 1974 invasion.
Ideological confusion and anti-Semitism
At the same time, he denounces the hypocrisy of part of the Greek political spectrum. Left-wing activists, including SYRIZA, are harassing Israeli tourists who come to Greece, while they themselves claim to disagree with Netanyahu's policies. Targeting people simply because of their ethnic identity is an act of political wretchedness, he notes.
Gal even comments on Greece's justice minister, who exaggerated the activists' connection to Turkish interests. And yet, the truth is that Erdogan himself would not hesitate to attack Israel if given the chance. He may dream of the fall of Jerusalem, but, as Gal emphatically points out, if it attempts such a thing, Turkey will lose.
Greek startup in the defense sector
At the end of the article, there is also a reference to the positive side of the Greek strategic awakening. A Greek former Apple engineer, Dimitrios Kottas, founded in Athens the Delian Alliance Industries, a startup that develops autonomous weapons systems, drones and surveillance towers.
The company has already raised $14 million and aims to compete with defense industry giants. Delian was created out of the need to strengthen Greece's deterrence capability, especially after the tension with Turkey in the Aegean.
Shay Gal's text is not just an analysis. It is a wake-up call. For Greece, for Cyprus, for Israel. The Turkish threat knows no borders. And the liberation of Cyprus – militarily, politically and geostrategically – is now a matter for the entire Eastern Mediterranean.
