Dr. Anthony Fauci, one of the United States' most prominent health advisors during the pandemic, recently declared that the country has now passed the "pandemic phase." The statement reinforces the sense that the worst is over.
Despite a significant decline in COVID-19 cases in February and March, the BA.2 Omicron variant appears to be gradually putting cases back on an upward trajectory. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), infections have increased by more than 35% in the past week, mainly due to unvaccinated citizens.
Mandatory vaccinations for employees are returning
Although many cities in the US had previously mandated vaccinations for public employees, declining case numbers have led to some measures being relaxed or even lifted. In March, New York City Mayor Eric Adams partially lifted mandatory vaccinations for athletes and artists.
However, Philadelphia is preparing to reimpose strict measures. Mayor Jim Kenney announced that starting May 31, city employees covered by the new regulation will have to have received at least the first dose of the vaccine. Those who do not provide a medical or religious exemption by June 6 will be placed on 30 days of forced leave (with or without pay), with the possibility of dismissal thereafter.
This decision had been announced as early as 2021, but was delayed due to a lack of agreement with the city's four largest unions. Finally, on April 26, an agreement was reached with the police union, with a new implementation deadline of May 31.
However, there is a clause that allows the measure to be postponed if one of the unions manages to secure an extension, something the firefighters' union is already seeking.
Vaccination: The strongest preventive measure
Regardless of the final outcome of the implementation of the measure, experts still argue that vaccination remains the most effective tool for combating COVID-19 and protecting public health.
For those who remain unvaccinated, the need to protect themselves and those around them becomes even more imperative.
