Kabul is now in the hands of the Taliban and thousands of Afghans are trying to flee their country. This new situation has raised several concerns about a new, huge wave of refugees in Greece. Greece's position on the management of any illegal migratory flows from Afghanistan is now clear. Following a telephone conversation between Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis and Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan, both sides made it clear that the two countries would not become repositories for migrants.
As the EU's external border Greece has taken on a huge burden on the immigration issue. The government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis states that the policy that will be followed in the immigration is clearly different from the one followed by the SYRIZA government in the period 2015-16.
Undersecretary to the Prime Minister and Government Spokesman Giannis Oikonomou told SKAI, "There is no way we can relive those chaotic moments we experienced in 2015 or the country becomes an open vineyard." He also added that Turkey does not want flows in its territories. As part of this government line, the Orestiada Border Guard Center is on standby. In the same situation is the Coast Guard that patrols the Aegean day and night.
