How will he react? Will he defend liberal democracy or renounce its code of values?
The book On Freedom by Timothy Snyder, an American professor at Yale University and one of the most important scholars of 20th-century European history, was recently published.
The book It is instilled from the beginning that we must think of freedom in terms of morality and not simply as what we feel we want to do. The author, referring to Trump, believes that the planet leader has not shown that he understands why people fight for their freedom, and for this very reason he cannot properly approach the war in Ukraine. He sees everything as transactions between rich people, but the Russia-Ukraine war is not a transaction between rich people.
At the recent trilateral summit between Greece – Israel – Cyprus the axis of cooperation between these three countries was discussed with the aim of contributing to the stability and security of the Eastern Mediterranean. Trump approves of such cooperation, as they move at the pace that the United States is attempting to impose through various methods in the wider region. The "charismatic" president is not limited to the vision of a "great America", but is marching to change the world by shaking up the world order. Moreover, we should not overlook the fascist policy of the member of the trilateral cooperation, Prime Minister of Israel Netanyahu, officially wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity and violation of international law! What will, therefore, be the consequences of this cooperation, under Trump's supervision, for the change in world politics?
Moreover, the rise of leaders like Orbán in Hungary and, of course, Trump in the US, shows a dynamic expressed through personal models of authoritarian power, further reinforcing the normalization of far-right at an international level. As Political Science Professor Vasiliki Georgiadou observes, “the transatlantic and transnational normalization of the far Right is a process in which Trump acted as an accelerator, but not as the sole protagonist of the entire and still evolving process.”
However, we should not forget that the prevailing system of government for years was liberal democracy, on which European integration was founded. With it, popular sovereignty protected by institutions, the rule of law, accountability and the protection of rights will soon all be a thing of the past and power will be unaccountable. Democracy will gradually cease to be liberal.
How will Europe react? Will it defend liberal democracy or renounce its code of values, its cultural identity?
Let us hope and wish that the changing times will inspire Europe for a better future for humanity. Happy New Year!
