It is important that most EU countries agreed to end the humanitarian blockade of Gaza and passed a resolution recognizing the state of Palestine. Few are left to follow and the Greek government's reticence to support this country is striking. Greece's historical relationship with both the Israel as well as with Palestine, it should direct the government towards the only just solution that is apparent for the Palestinian issue, as it is the voice of reason and reconciliation for peace. Moreover, this is an update by the House of Representatives of a unanimous resolution of the plenary of the House, in 2015, for the recognition of the state of Palestine.
As a Greek, I am saddened to watch President Trump constantly come up with plans to secure peace and win, of course… the Nobel Peace Prize, and we Greeks wait for the rest of the countries to sign so we can move forward. Finally, can our country, which was the first to praise the principles of law and solidarity, not take any initiative?
But let's leave antiquity behind and come to modern Greece, when Andreas Papandreou laid the foundations for the Palestine problem in the 1980s, as Greece was one of the first states in Europe to bravely recognize the PLO and he himself welcomed Yasser Arafat to Greece in 1982.
Isocrates, in his “On Peace” speech, advises the Athenians, and his advice is so necessary for those in power today! “If you present yourselves as warmongers in the study of war and its preparation, but peacemakers in doing nothing contrary to law, you will not only make this city happy, but also all the other Greeks.”
