The Greek News & Radio FL newspaper expresses its deep sadness over the tragic incident that occurred yesterday in the Aegean Sea, off the island of Chios, where at least fifteen people lost their lives and twenty-four children, men and women were injured.
We express our deepest condolences to the families of the victims and our sincere support to the people who survived this tragedy.
Although the exact circumstances of the fatal incident have not yet been fully clarified, the reality is unforgiving. From 2015 to 2025, 3.148 people lost their lives or are missing at sea in the Aegean. These are human lives that were lost unjustly. These are tragedies that could have been prevented.
Every day, people are led on dangerous sea crossings, lured by false promises and exploitation. They are promised safety and a better future, when in reality they are abandoned to the sea, to fear and death. Those who manage to escape often continue to fall victim to exploitation, with women and children paying the heaviest price.
States must do more. To work effectively to resolve the conflicts and conditions that force people to flee their homelands. To truly support countries of first asylum. To create legal and safe alternative routes of movement. Above all, to ensure that no more lives are lost at sea.
And here a relentless question arises: what are the UN Council, the international organizations and the powerful institutions that are supposed to prevent such tragedies doing in practice? How many more lives must be lost for there to be meaningful decisions, real pressure on those responsible and specific protection measures?
Protecting human life at sea is not an option. It is a legal and humanitarian obligation. Silence, delays and words without action cost human lives.
We deeply regret the victims. We must not become accustomed to death. We must not accept human exploitation as normality.
With respect to the memory of the people who were lost,
Ioanna Lazarou
