George Patoulis

George Patoulis was born in Athens and originally from Crete. He studied Medicine at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens and then specialized in Orthopaedics at the University Hospital "Laiko", where he prepared his doctoral thesis on "Deep Thrombophlebitis in Hip Fractures". In the period 1998–2000 he completed postgraduate studies at the National School of Public Health, specializing in Health Economics.
As an orthopedist, he worked in various primary health care structures, such as the IKA Tavros, the IKA Amaroussi-Erythraea-Lykovrysa, the Polyclinic of the Municipality of Pefki, while he was a collaborator of the "Errikos Dunant" and "Athenian Clinic" clinics.
His union activity began in 1995, when he founded the Association of Specialist Doctors of Athens-Piraeus, of which he served as president until 1998. In 1996, he founded the "New Doctors" faction and in 1997 the Panhellenic Association "New Doctors", of which he served as president until 2004, developing voluntary action in the border, island and mountainous areas of the country. In 2002, he founded the Association of Freelance Doctors of Attica (E.EL.I.A.), of which he is currently Honorary President.
In 1998, he was elected for the first time as a municipal councilor in the Municipality of Pefki. During the period 2000–2005, he served as President of the Municipal Enterprise and the Municipal Polyclinic of Pefki, institutionalizing the provision of health services through the Local Government.
In 2004, he founded the National Inter-Municipal Network for Health and Social Solidarity of Local Authorities, currently the WHO National Inter-Municipal Network for Healthy Cities (EDDYPPY), of which he is continuously elected president, developing nationwide health promotion programs in member municipalities.
In 2006, he was elected Mayor of Maroussi for the first time. In 2010, he was re-elected Mayor of Maroussi from the first Sunday with a percentage of 57%, while in 2014 he was re-elected for a third consecutive term, also from the first Sunday, with a percentage of 58%.
In 2008, he assumed the position of President of the Social Policy and Human Resources Committee of the TEDKNA. In 2011, he was elected President of the Association for the Protection and Regeneration of Pentelikos (SPAP) and was re-elected in 2013.
At the same time, in 2011 he was elected President of the Athens Medical Association for the first time. He was re-elected in 2014, 2018 and 2022, becoming the longest-serving President of the ISA in its history. In 2012, he founded the Social Mission Clinic, in collaboration with the Archbishop of Athens, Mr. Ieronymos, providing free medical care to thousands of fellow citizens in Attica and the border areas.
In 2014, he was elected President of the Central Association of Municipalities of Greece (KEDE). In 2015, he was elected Vice-President of the Council of European Municipalities and Regions (CEMR), while in 2016 he was re-elected to this position.
In 2018, he assumed the position of President of the Hellenic Health Tourism Council (ELITOUR), developing actions to promote Medical Tourism and the extroversion of the Greek healthcare community. At the same time, he founded the Global Hippocratic Institute of Doctors, which aims to highlight the universality of Hippocratic Medical science and Medical thought, as well as to interconnect Greek and international medical scientific potential throughout the world.
In the 2019 regional elections, he was elected Governor of Attica with 66%. In October 2019, he was elected First Vice-President of the Association of Greek Regions. In 2020, he was elected Vice-President of the European Committee of the Regions and Head of the Greek Delegation for the period 2020–2022, representing the country's Local Government at the European level. His term as Governor ended in 2023.
His writing and publishing work includes scientific articles in Greece and internationally, as well as publications such as the book "First Aid", the book Health Tourism Past, Present and Future by Hellenic Letters Publications, the magazines "New Doctors" and "Municipal Health", as well as studies such as "Doctor Inflation in Athens" by ISA.
He is married and has 2 sons.
