The meeting at the UN and the absence of Greek-Turkish contact
Donald Trump and Tayyip Erdogan met for two and a half hours on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, in a climate of mutual respect. They agreed to develop cooperation in the field of nuclear energy for peaceful purposes, while the purchase of 200 Boeing aircraft for the Turkish civil aviation was announced.
The issues of the S-400, the upgrade of the F-16 and the possible reintegration of Turkey into the F-35 program were also discussed, but no decisions were made. Despite the enthusiasm of the Turkish media, analysts estimate that the results were positive, but not decisive for Ankara's strategic plans.
At the same time, the planned Mitsotakis-Erdogan meeting was canceled —at Turkish initiative—, a fact that caused heated discussions in Greece. Some interpreted it as a sign of arrogance on the part of the Turkish President, others as a reminder of the pending visit of the Greek Prime Minister to Ankara. In reality, there was no clear agenda, as Turkey continues to promote its positions on the “Blue Homeland” and its rights in the Eastern Mediterranean and Cyprus.
