To those who think that Greece does not matter today, let me say that they could not make a bigger mistake. Today, like old Greece, is of the utmost importance for anyone looking to find himself.

Electronic identity and…. ID card

21 Sep, 2023
Identity

Identity

Identity

Pandemic, austerity, fires, unexpected weather phenomena, and now... the new identity! Citizens, exhausted by their living conditions, wonder what the purpose of changing the type of identity is. Others react to the non-mention of religion, as the Greek is by nature sensitive to the subject of religion, and others worry about the freedom of their lives.

I believe that it is wrong to categorize citizens as deniers and "conspiracy theorists", because the reactions are human, and can be justified if we consider that in this country, responsible information of the citizens is never provided for. A recent example, the vaccination for the pandemic, when neither more nor less the entire population was in danger of being labeled "anti-vaccine" and punished! Regarding the identities, the state made sure to inform the Church, and it did rightly, but for the citizen, why did it not care?

The various experts reassure us by saying that the new IDs will have an electronic signature, which allows easier transactions with the State and prevents their forgery or forgery. Besides, the stored tax and insurance data will serve the citizen in health and other public services. All information is encrypted with an algorithm, which experts claim is unbreakable.

I'm not an expert, but the very word "algorithm" reminds me of the remarks of the famous Israeli historian Yuval Noah Harari in his latest book "Sapiens. An illustrated story. The birth of man" where he is concerned with this phenomenon, he prepares us for the future and advises us.

It is a fact that the spread of the internet twenty years ago brought an algorithmic revolution. Harari, then, points out that there is a shift in prestige from the human to the algorithm in many fields, from the way entertainment is conducted to the conduct of war. It is not too late to put this change under control - believes Harari - the citizens themselves must put pressure on their governments in this regard, because the stake is indeed greater. Algorithms already tell us what to watch and what to buy. Before long they will know better than we do what we should study, what profession we should follow, what political parties we should support. If we do not control these powerful technologies, we may witness the emergence of the worst totalitarian regimes in history, and even in supposedly free societies people will lose control of their lives.

What would the people in charge of the European Union respond to these particularly worrying remarks about the fate of the peoples?

Shifting authority from humans to algorithms is undoubtedly very dangerous. Identity, I believe, is not just the plastic or the electronic card, but the certification of the "man" with his language and culture. The indifference to Man, which is already observed, unfortunately, in the European family, and the "identification" with Technology, there is a danger of turning Technology from a blessing into a curse, that we all run after our creations and that everything is done in our favor , but… except us!
