On the occasion of the 250th anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence on July 4, 2026, United States Ambassador to the Hellenic Republic Kimberly Guilfoyle welcomed distinguished guests to the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center on July 2, for the official reception of the U.S. Embassy in Greece for Independence Day, in the presence of more than 3.000 guests, including the official guest, Deputy Prime Minister Costis Hatzidakis.
Set against one of Athens’ most iconic cultural landmarks, the evening honored America’s extraordinary journey, the democratic ideals that inspired its founding, and the enduring bonds between the United States and Greece. The event brought together Greek government officials, diplomatic representatives, military leaders, cultural and business figures, friends, and members of the American and Greek communities.
In her keynote address, Ambassador Guilfoyle noted:
“For 250 years, Greece has been a part of American history. It was there from the beginning, when a pioneering idea for a government of the people ignited the flame of revolution 250 years ago. It was there 50 years later, when American Philhellenes supported Greek revolutionaries in their own fight for independence. It was there in the difficult years after World War II, when critical Marshall Plan aid provided food, clothing, and medical supplies to Greeks in need, and when American Liberty ships laid the foundation for Greece’s legendary shipping industry today. And it is here today, in the historic work we do together to shape a safer, stronger, and more prosperous future. Our partnership is deeply rooted in history and our shared values: freedom, faith, and family.”
Ambassador Guilfoyle emphasized that the partnership between the United States and Greece is rooted in history, but is defined by a shared vision for the future — from energy security and defense cooperation to education, cultural heritage, tourism, and the bonds between our peoples, which continue to strengthen the relationship.
“Freedom does not stand alone. It must be protected. It must be renewed. It must be passed on to future generations by citizens who believe in it, by allies who support it, and by the brave men and women who defend it every day,” said Ambassador Guilfoyle. “May the United States of America continue to be a beacon of freedom, may our partnership with Greece continue to grow in strength and purpose, and may the ideal of freedom endure for generations to come.”
Deputy Prime Minister Costis Hatzidakis honored the partnership between the United States and Greece, stating:
“Today we celebrate the birth of a great nation — a nation founded on freedom, democracy, and the belief that people should shape their own future. The United States and Greece have inspired each other from the very beginning. Ancient Athens inspired the American Republic. And America inspired the Greek people in their fight for freedom in 1821. History has brought our two nations together. Shared values have kept us united. Our partnership is stronger than ever, and we want it to be even stronger. May our friendship continue to grow. May our alliance remain strong.”
The reception included a grand program of music, ceremony, and celebration, with the national anthems by American singer Julia Cole and Greek National Opera singer Elena Kelesidi, as the flags of the United States and Greece were presented by members of the United States Marine Corps.
The Rhine River Ramblers of the U.S. Army Band in Europe and Africa opened the evening with a live performance in the Agora of the Stavros Niarchos Foundation Cultural Center. They were followed by U.S. Department of State Cultural Envoys Restless Road and Julia Cole, who brought the sound and spirit of contemporary American country music to Athens. Guests also enjoyed a spectacular Air Force flyover and a spectacular fireworks show, before the evening concluded with a headline performance by Grammy-winning American artist NE-YO.
