To those who think that Greece does not matter today, let me say that they could not make a bigger mistake. Today, like old Greece, is of the utmost importance for anyone looking to find himself.

Governments are handing over responsibilities to Artificial Intelligence

From Albania to Japan – the global wave of digital governance

The developments are rapid and taking place almost silently. While public opinion in many countries remains uninvolved, governments around the world are already transferring critical responsibilities to algorithms and Artificial Intelligence (AI) systems, preparing for a new era of digital bureaucracy.

The beginning from Albania

Albania has become the first country to officially announce the placement of an algorithm alongside ministers to manage public procurement, a move that fundamentally changes the way decisions are made about the management of public money.

Examples from around the world

The internationalization of the phenomenon is impressive:

  • United Arab Emirates: Ministry of State for AI, with a mission to completely overhaul the digital bureaucracy.
  • Spain: Creation of AESIA, for supervision and licensing of algorithms used by the government.
  • United States: The IRS is using AI to audit hedge fund returns, identifying tax evasion schemes.
  • Canada: Taxpayers are assessed algorithmically, while “algorithmic impact reports” are required before new models.
  • Italy: Using machine learning to detect fake VAT returns and creating a chatbot for auditors.
  • France: Identification of undeclared swimming pools through aerial photography and imposition of tax fines.
  • Latvia: Tax chatbot serves citizens since 2020.
  • Romania: Robotic automation and AI in the management of EU agricultural investments
  • Estonia, Denmark, Singapore, South Korea, Japan: Applications ranging from content classification and social programs to personalized healthcare.
  • Nepal: New national AI policy aims to modernize bureaucracy and introduce legal frameworks.

The crucial question

Artificial Intelligence is no longer a future promise; it is already here. Governance, taxation, welfare, even the daily communication of citizens with the state, are gradually moving to algorithmic systems.

The crucial question is: what will happen when AI becomes stronger and presents itself in its full form?
Will it remain a tool that serves humanity or will it become a factor that directs our lives without transparency and democratic control?
