To those who think that Greece does not matter today, let me say that they could not make a bigger mistake. Today, like old Greece, is of the utmost importance for anyone looking to find himself.

Brief information about the contents of the book:

The Greek Revolution of 1821, whose 200th anniversary was recently celebrated, stands out from the European revolutions of the early 19th  century, because they were the only ones that were crowned with success: they were the only ones that were crowned with success. The national Greek state, which emerged as a result of the Revolution of 1821, was the first independent state in the former Balkan dominions of the Ottomans. For a decade, the Greek Revolution was the link between the revolutionary movements of the 20s and 30sth h. It gave a strong impetus to the processes of national revival in the Balkans, found a response throughout Europe and across the ocean in the form of the Philhellenic movement, and contributed to the awakening of national feelings among the peoples of the Middle East.

The 200-year anniversary of the Greek Revolution was one of the central objects and themes of the 2021 Special Year of Greek-Russian History, which was inaugurated with SOCIO-SCIENTIFIC FORUM "200 YEARS OF THE NATIONAL LIBERATION REVOLUTION OF THE GREEKS" and its INTERNATIONAL SCIENTIFIC CONFERENCE: 200 years of the National Renaissance of the Greeks! The historical significance of the National-Liberation Revolution of the Greek People in 1821. International impact, influence on the events of the time, topicality today !!!, organized by the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences and the Center of Greek Culture - K.E.P. in Moscow. The international conference dedicated to the Revolution took place within the framework of the Forum 200 years of the National Renaissance of the Greeks! The historical significance of the National-Liberation Revolution of the Greek People in 1821. International impact, influence on the events of the time, topicality today!!!. Many of the presentations at that Conference formed the basis of this collective monograph, and subsequently other researchers participated in its writing. Thus, an international group of experts was created, working at the forefront of contemporary Balkan studies. The composition of the group of authors predetermined, in part, the perception, the central idea and the content of the particular book.

In the first part of the collective monograph we decided to present modern approaches to the study of the history of the Revolution. Prelude to the creation, the emergence of independent Greece was the first experience of a neo-Greek state entity – the Ionian State of the Seven Islands, with an analysis of whose legacy the book begins. A separate chapter is dedicated to the transnational dimension of the Revolution, which is examined with the example of the well-known Greco-Russian Ypsilanti family. Particular attention of researchers attracts the initial stage of the Greek Revolution – the rebellion in the Danubian principalities under the leadership of Alexander Ypsilantis. The book presents not only modern ideas about the course of the rebellion, but also the reaction of the foreign press to it, which largely determined public opinion in European countries. The ideas of Russian society about the national liberation struggle of the Greeks can be traced through Russian travel literature, the memoirs of Russian travelers, as well as the poetry of that time. Another important issue raised in the book is the attitude of the Church and the clergy towards the Revolution.

The second part of the collective monograph has a wider geographical and chronological scope and is dedicated to the legacy of the Revolution and its impact on the history of the Balkans. It begins with an analysis of the Revolution of 1821 as an ideology, which later assumed a fixed position in Greek national ideology. Separate chapters are devoted to the actions of European diplomacy around Athos in the second quarter of the 19th century, as well as to the treatment of the Crimean War and related events in Greece by the abbot of the Russian Apostolic Church in Athens, Archimandrite Antonin (Kapustin). These themes are completely unexplored aspects of the history of the Balkan region, which experienced new realities, due to the process of nation-state creation, which was already beginning. This process was accompanied by an increase in the role of national self-determination in various areas of the life of the local population. The chapters on the Greek population of the Balkans during the Russo-Turkish War of 1877-1878 are dedicated to the study of this problem with the use of new sources, highlighting, at the same time, the development of national identities in Thessaloniki in the decades of the 60s-70s of the 19th century . The development of national ideologies put on the agenda the question of the creation of national Churches and their relationship with the Patriarchate of Constantinople. These issues are discussed in the chapters on the relationship of the Romanian Orthodox Church with the Patriarchate in the 60s-80sth century and about ecclesiastical "peaceful revolutions" in the Balkans and the Middle East. A separate chapter deals with the impact of the legacy of the Revolution on the national liberation movement of the Greeks in the early 20th century. Finally, the last two chapters of the book deal with the present. They analyze the perception of traditions dating back to the Revolution by contemporary Greek society and their use by official ideology and propaganda.

We are particularly happy that the presentations, the material of such an important scientific and public event, which was included in the official events of the Dedicated Year of Greek-Russian History 2021 and effectively launched the Dedicated Year 2021, the Social-Scientific Forum GREECE-RUSSIA PUBLIC DIPLOMACY: Greece and Russia between the past and the future: events, people, ideas.

and the International Scientific Conference on 200 years of the National Renaissance of the Greeks! The historical significance of the National-Liberation Revolution of the Greek People in 1821. International impact, influence on the events of the time, topicality today!!! are published in this monograph.

We would especially like to emphasize the highest degree of collective, harmonious interaction, partnership, constructive cooperation and partnership of all the involved bodies, which held the Forum and the Conference, such as the Center of Greek Culture - K.E.P., the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences, the Association of Cultural and Business Cooperation of Russia-Greece-Cyprus – AKDS "Friendship", the Faculty of History of Moscow State University "Lomonosov”, the State Library of Russia [Lenin Library], the Center for Hellenic-Russian Historical Research – KERIE (Greece), and to express our gratitude to all involved organizations and colleagues.

With collective efforts, we managed, after 200 years, in the center of the Russian capital, to carry out one of the most important and large-scale projects/events of the Anniversary Year of the 200 bYears of the Revolution and the Dedicatory Year of Greece-Russia, a fact that is legal in development and evolution of the dynamics of our common historical, spiritual, cultural community of our two identical peoples, peoples with a common perception, worldview, mentality.

We hope that this book, on which leading specialists from different countries worked, will show the reader the current level of scientific research on the Greek Revolution of 1821 and its legacy in Balkan history, will reveal the scale, the scope of this historical phenomenon , under the banner and ideology of which in the next two hundred (200) years Greece itself developed, will create a comprehensive image and idea of the degree of influence of the Revolution on the life, the national consciousness of the peoples of the entire Balkan region.
