MEP Costas Mavridis (DIKO-S&D) spoke at a briefing by NATO Deputy Secretary General Radmila Shekerinska on the results of the NATO summit in Ankara, at the European Parliament's Security and Defense Committee in Brussels.
In his one-minute intervention, the Cypriot MEP stated the following:
"I don't know how much I can ask you in a minute, so I'll focus on one specific issue. Maybe this is an easy question, but it's up to you."
Do you know any NATO member that occupies part of European territory? Do you know any NATO member that occupies part of Syrian territory? Do you know any NATO member that has a threat of war against another NATO member? Do you know any NATO member that, based on our latest Report here in the European Parliament, is not a democracy but rather an authoritarian Islamic regime?”
Concluding, Mr. Mavridis stated:
"To make it even easier for you, I inform you that the answer is the same to all these questions. As for those who support Erdogan, the day is coming when they will regret it. But until that moment, we as Europe will pay a very heavy price."
In her response, the NATO Deputy Secretary General avoided answering, simply noting that NATO consists of 32 members and we are trying to maintain its unity.
