Le Monde reports in today's publication that the wiretapping case, or the "Greek Watergate” as he calls it, weakens Prime Minister K. Mitsotakis.
As the article states: "His turn towards authoritarianism is causing concern in the corridors of the European Parliament. THE the wiretapping case is added to the investigations into the illegal repatriation of migrants by the Greek authorities, the repeated attacks against journalists or workers in humanitarian organizations", while it has also proceeded to "suppress freedom of expression in the state news agency".
MEP Sophie in't Veld, rapporteur at the European Parliament's Committee for the general investigation into surveillance software, says that the issue of Greek wiretapping "is a more serious issue than Watergate".
Before the publication of Le Monde, the Guardian article saw the light of day, where a reference was made to the matter, mainly due to the request for the establishment of an inquiry committee by PASOK - KINAL.
"The Greek authorities, on the one hand, claim that they are innocent, so they have nothing to hide, and on the other hand, they are very reluctant to shed light on the whole matter," reports the Guardian.
"Surveillance is not a new feature of the Greek state, where memories of such practices during the military dictatorship of 1967-74 have not yet faded among the older generation."
