To those who think that Greece does not matter today, let me say that they could not make a bigger mistake. Today, like old Greece, is of the utmost importance for anyone looking to find himself.

LIKE A MONKEY, LIKE A BEAR...

LIKE A MONKEY, LIKE A BEAR...

29 Feb, 2024

My brother, Lefteris, was afraid of water... Lefteris was a good boy... alert, respectful... but stupid. If you had a conversation with him, he would turn ten...

Our old people died early, leaving us alone to fend for ourselves. I was the oldest. I became both mother and father to him. But from morning to night at work, in double shifts, Lefteris spent many hours alone. He grew up on the streets...He often came to me bruised, black...

-Get it together you scumbags, one day you'll be crippled for good by the assholes you keep messing with...

But Lefteris did not care about such things. He was never afraid of man or trouble. He was only afraid of water. The sea…

As soon as he was fired from the army, he started working here and there, but he was nowhere to be found. He worked two or three part-time jobs, a week at the most, wherever he went... one time the boss fired him, one time he didn't like the job, one turned sour, the other smelled bad... The same with the women... he kept them for a while, then he got bored and tickled them...

I saw and left, I decided to talk to him: "come and let me take you with me to the machine shop, the foreman - Vassilis gives a good salary", I told him, but he smiled...

-And then you will find me a good girl to marry me?

He said mockingly, but regretted it as if he saw me clouding over. He took me by the hand and spoke to me tenderly:

-Listen brother, I don't want you to be sad. You look to fix your life and leave me... I, sooner or later, will find my way... But hey, I'm not like most people, who look to get comfortable with a maid, a woman, children, with such... I think about this and you know what comes to my mind? Huh? You know; The gypsy who passes by with the bear and has put the copper on her nose and drags her from the copper and makes her do somersaults and pretend that Vougiouklaki is combing her hair.... Sometimes, in addition to the bear, he drags a monkey along...he weighs the tambourine and the monkey shakes its ass to and fro and then takes the tambourine and goes around, picking up the crumbs thrown by those who enjoy the spectacle... how I pity these living brothers... how I pity them... my soul burns when I see them like this, with the chain... the bear with the copper, the monkey with the gluttony... and the gypsy weighing the tambourine, breaking the fun passers-by... one day, by the Virgin Mary, Sotiris, in the cross I make for you, I will catch someone, put a chain on him and make the monkey and the bear drag him around until they tear him apart...

I won't let anyone bully me, Sotirakis... No one and no one treats me like a monkey... like a bear... They called me a free man and I want to live as free as possible...

-And what do you intend to do? How will you go? How will you live?

- I'll go on a boat...

I was shocked!

- Will you go boating? You; How; Since... since...

He laughed. His teeth glistened in the light, strong and large, reminding me of a bear's teeth. Only in the eyes was a darkness, the one that takes the water as it deepens.

- Since I'm afraid of water, isn't that what you want to say? Listen, bro… I thought about it. Water is dangerous, yes, but it's also freedom... Think how many things I'll see, how many places I'll get to know, what strange places, what different habits, what women... oh, my mother, I like it, brother, I like it, I tell you, I'll I thresh the whole world, Sotos, I won't stay moldering in a corner, with a job and a woman for life... Your little brother grew up Sotiris. Time for him to overcome his childhood fears once and for all and grab life by the horns...

This happened at the end of 64... Lefteris boarded a truck for Panama. At first everything was going well. He sent me a letter, a card... Even dollars once or twice. I made my cross… Hey, you say? I wish, my Christ, that he would comply, that he would calm down...

Nah!...frustrated hopes... Got involved in a fight on board, one night in bad weather when the boat was going to unload china at Kobe... Some of the crew were playing cards, mine among them... some misunderstanding happened over the game, they got hands on. Lefteris with another one, the wave came from the sides and hit them just in time, the other one falls dead with Lefteris on top of him, all around breaking glasses, overturning things... disaster... when they managed to stand at their feet, the only one who didn't get up was the one arguing with Lefteris. He was still lying, slightly on his side, with a large piece of glass sticking out of his neck…

He stayed there forever, in the Sea of Japan... And Lefteris behind bars for murder...

I never believed she killed him. It was an accident, bad timing. But how do you tell this to the judges? What to explain to the widow and the child who lost his father? And my brother Lefteris, how can I comfort him?

-But the Virgin Mary, Sotiri, I didn't do it, in the cross I make you! Don't let them put chains on me brother!… Save me, Sotiris, save me!

They took him down to Crete, to Agia. I used to run with the lawyers at the Courts of Appeal and the like, even if something changes. In the meantime we have reached the end of ΄66. The lawyer informs me that a trial has been set for the Court of Appeal in early December. On 7/12, the day after Ai-Nicolas, Lefteris together with other prisoners from the prisons of Agia, boarded the ship HERACLEIO, bound for Piraeus. Inside the ship, the guards-attendants tie the prisoners to their bunks for safety...

Then...after...what can I tell you about the after without breaking my soul into a thousand pieces once again? I can't even think about them, let alone say them...

Then the water came and took them... He was afraid of the water... God was dawning on his day and it was December 8, 1966... Wild weather, like then, in the sea of Japan... The bad thing happened around 2 or so, outside Falconera. In a few minutes, the ship goes, the people go, Lefteris goes too, who never lived free and who I, his brother Sotiris, didn't manage to finally save him from his bad fate...and you know? What torments me most of all, what has haunted me for fifty years now every dawn on December 8th and I come to the port to listen to the groans sent up by the water, is that in the end, Lefteris is still there, chained … like a monkey, like a bear…

...................................................................................................... ..

An eerie silence has fallen on E2... Frozen air brings scraps of paper and dry leaves to our feet... It's dawn and the humidity pierces us to the bone, yet no one makes a move to leave... Suddenly the man next to me jerks and starts shaking... silent sobs they startle him and some big tears start to drip from his eyes onto his unshaven cheeks... and as they roll down frozen to his feet, they look like hail that falls rapidly and hits the dock with a noise, forming small, frozen piles at our feet... First time in my life I saw such thick hail...
