A new sexually transmitted disease consisting of highly contagious strains of fungi is causing concern in the United States health care system, as well as globally. This diabetic scenario began with the diagnosis of a 30-year-old man in New York with disseminated ringworm, a form of fungal infection.
The discovery of this new pathogen has shaken the waters in the public health sector as it raises concerns about its spread on a wider scale. The fact that the patient had recently traveled to Greece also rekindles concerns about the international spread of the disease.
Doctors and epidemiologists around the world are intensively researching this new pathogenic strain, trying to understand the scope of the problem and its modes of transmission. Prevention, promotion of information and early diagnosis are the main priorities in dealing with this new threat to public health.
