The Minister of Civil Protection, Michalis Chrysochoidis, visited Evros yesterday together with the Minister of Defense, Nikos Panagiotopoulos. Michalis Chrysochoidis stated:
"Our borders will remain secure and inviolable. It is our decision - and this is the order of the Prime Minister that we are conveying today here to the officers of the Armed Forces and the Greek Police and to the local bodies - to defend our borders. Our borders will remain secure and inviolable. We will not allow unedited and erratic movements and we will not allow any attempt to violate them. The Afghan crisis is creating new data in the geopolitical sphere and at the same time creating opportunities for migration flows. It is well known that we as a European country participate in the institutions of the European Union and within this framework a number of decisions are taken, however as a country we cannot wait impatiently for the possible consequences. "We support the democratic rights and freedoms of the people, but at the same time we can not allow the instrumentalization of the migratory flows that may arise."
The Minister of Defense noted that "Greece continues to be shielded against any potential or existing security threat", something that both ministers assured at the points they visited. Mr. Chrysochoidis also stated that, “The construction of the fence of about 40 km in very critical parts of our borders - by the way and not only - has been completed these days, a project that is admirable, which creates possibilities and conditions for deterrence and the completed automated electronic border surveillance system, which we visited today for the first time and is starting to work these days. It is extremely technologically advanced, with great potential and efficiency in border surveillance ".
Regarding the previous meeting, he stated that "a series of very specific operational measures have been decided, which will be developed in the next period of time and will create further deterrent capacity".
