A large, coordinated operation to locate missing and particularly vulnerable minors took place in March 2026 in Southern California, leading to the safe location or recovery of 37 children and seven arrests.
The operation, called "Operation Safe Return," was carried out by the US Marshals Service, Central District of California, in collaboration with the Riverside County Anti-Human Trafficking Task Force and a number of federal, state and local agencies.
According to the official announcement of the US Marshals Service on March 9, 2026, the operation lasted one week and had as its main goal the identification of minors who were considered to be at particularly high risk. More than 50 children aged 14 to 17 had been identified in the databases as missing and were the focus of the investigations.
The investigations were not limited to Riverside County. Authorities searched for and located minors in areas of San Bernardino, Los Angeles and Orange Counties, while some cases led the investigation teams as far away as Northern California, Arizona and Nevada.
The end result was the safe identification of 37 children.
Seven arrests were made, including a major federal arrest related to a sex trafficking case involving a minor, the US Marshals said.
The operation was particularly significant because it went beyond simply locating the children. Once found, the minors had access to victim support services, medical assistance where necessary, and social services, with the aim of either safely returning them to their legal guardians or placing them in an appropriate protected environment.
On March 10, California Governor Gavin Newsom and state Attorney General Rob Bonta publicly announced the results of the operation.
Rob Bonta emphasized that the cooperation of state, local and federal authorities allowed the identification and protection of dozens of vulnerable minors, emphasizing that the search for missing children is one of the most important missions of law enforcement agencies.
For his part, Gavin Newsom pointed out that every child has the right to live safely and without the risk of exploitation, underlining the importance of protecting victims and prosecuting those who exploit minors.
Operation Safe Return involved, among others, the California Department of Justice, the FBI, Homeland Security Investigations, the US Secret Service, the Riverside County Sheriff's Office, the Riverside County District Attorney's Office, the California Highway Patrol, the Riverside Police Department, as well as other police and social services.
Particular attention is required, however, in the way this particular case is presented. The official announcements do not mention that all 37 children were victims of human trafficking or sexual exploitation. Operation Safe Return was tasked with identifying “critically missing children,” that is, missing children who were considered to be at increased risk of violence, sexual exploitation, substance use, criminal activity, or domestic violence.
The operation demonstrates once again that behind every case of a missing minor there may be a different and particularly complex family or social background.
For 37 children, however, this particular week in March had a result that matters the most: they were found alive and taken to a safer environment.
