A serious crisis appears to be developing within the Holy Monastery of Sinai, one of the most historic and respected monastic institutions of Orthodoxy, as 15 monks of the brotherhood have called for the dethronement of Archbishop of Sinai, Faran and Raitho, Mr. Damianos.
The rift, which has now taken on an official dimension, leads the Archbishop to appeal to the Patriarch of Jerusalem, Mr. Theophilos, requesting the expulsion of the monks who are turning against him. The monks' stance is characterized by the Archbishop's close associates as uncanonical and seditious.
According to information, the rift had been apparent for some time. Communications between the monks and the Archbishop were now carried out in the presence of legal representatives, while in some cases they were exchanged out of court. The monks themselves, in private conversations, express their dissatisfaction, stating that they no longer feel the Archbishop as their spiritual father. As they report, "for years he has been visiting the Monastery sporadically, while decisions are made more by his associates than by him."
The Patriarch of Jerusalem is closely monitoring the developments and is reported to have initiated a series of consultations with canonists and his close advisors both in Jerusalem and Athens. His aim is to assess the depth of the crisis and examine the Archbishop's request within the framework of the Regulations governing the operation of the Sinai Archdiocese and the autonomous status of the Monastery.
The Monastery of Saint Catherine of Sinai is a global spiritual beacon, a symbol of the Orthodox presence in the Egyptian desert for centuries. The developments taking place during this period are causing intense interest and concern in both ecclesiastical circles and believers around the world.
At a time when the unity and internal peace of the Church are being tested on many levels, the crisis at Sinai is a reminder of how fragile balance can be even in the most sacred spaces.
