In early November 1931, a few days after the Cypriot uprising against the British colonial regime — the so-called October Uprising — the Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet published a brief response from Thessaloniki. The telegram came from the news agency TT (Tidningarnas Telegrambyrå) and captures the emotion and support that the events provoked in Greece.
The news refers to memorial services held in Thessaloniki for those killed during the riots in Cyprus, as well as the massive participation of the public, including the city's Jewish community, which expressed its support for the request for the Union of Cyprus with Greece.
This short article is another example of how the international press, even in distant Sweden, followed with interest the developments in Cyprus and the reactions of the Greek people.
Translation of the Swedish excerpt (Svenska Dagbladet, November 9, 1931)
Thessaloniki, November 8 (TT)
On Sunday, memorial services were held for those who fell during the riots in Cyprus.
Thousands of people participated in the events.
Even the Jews, to a large extent, joined the movement in favor of the union of Cyprus with Greece.
