To those who think that Greece does not matter today, let me say that they could not make a bigger mistake. Today, like old Greece, is of the utmost importance for anyone looking to find himself.

The European Digital Identity Wallet is not mandatory for citizens

In a landscape where digitalization is advancing rapidly and new technologies are being introduced into our daily lives, a very important clarification comes from the European Union itself: the European Digital Identity Wallet it is not mandatory for citizens.

According to Regulation (EU) 2024/1183, published on 30 April 2024 in Official Journal of the European Union, Article 5a, paragraph 15:

"The use of European digital identity wallets is voluntary. Access to public and private services, access to the labour market and the freedom to conduct a business shall in no way be restricted or discouraged for natural or legal persons who do not use European digital identity wallets. Access to public and private services with other existing means of identification and verification shall remain possible."

This means that no citizen or business can be forced in the use of the digital wallet as a unique means of identification. Traditional forms of identity and verification (such as physical IDs or other digital options already in use) remain valid and perfectly acceptable.

What does this mean for us?

  • No question mandatory transition in digital identities.
  • Η access to public services, work and business activities protected for everyone — with or without EUDI Wallet.
  • The digital wallet remains optional tool, for those who want to use it.

In an era where concerns about privacy and digital rights are growing, this clear provision is an important step in preserving freedom of choice for citizens.

Let's remember: technology is a tool, not an obligation. And the European Union's decisions in this area seem to recognize this in practice.
