The role of the United States, as well as Germany, in its implementation Prespa Agreement has been pivotal and has been highlighted many times. It is clear that the Americans had aimed to sign the above agreement. Of course, these two states - the United States and Germany - also contributed greatly to the break-up of Yugoslavia, from which the state of Skopje emerged. Also, high-ranking circles of the Greek Diaspora in the USA know that the former Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras, regarding the Skopje issue, carried out as a submissive body all the orders he received from the White House.
However, the US interventions were not only towards our country, but also towards Skopje. It is worth remembering the crude intervention of the USA in the Parliament of Skopje, on October 19, 2018, during the crucial meeting for the change of the name of the country from "Republic of Macedonia" to "Republic of Northern Macedonia", pursuant to the Prespa Agreement . At that meeting, Zoran Zaef found it very difficult to secure the necessary votes and the events that took place inside and outside Parliament were unprecedented. Finally, after a lot of pressure on the deputies and while the process had started at 1 pm, at midnight the number of 80 deputies that were necessary to vote in favor of changing the name of their country was gathered. That day, a post on a Skopje website reported: "US Ambassador Jess Bailey with Zoran Zaef and Ali Ahmeti are in the office of Parliament Speaker Talat Jaafari». At a very high level, therefore, the US pressures on the internal affairs of Skopje, and in fact in an open way.
On June 8, 2021 o President of the United States Joe Biden has signed a decree providing for sanctions against those who undermine, threaten or obstruct the Prespa Accord. Obviously, the US does not even want to think that the Prespa Agreement can be overturned. They spent what they wanted and now they are trying to preserve it as the apple of their eye.
Also on October 22, 2021, the US House of Representatives passed H.Res.741, which states, among other things: "Expressing support for the designation of September 2022 as "Macedonian Cultural Heritage Month" and celebrating the Macedonian language, history and culture of Macedonian Americans and their incredible contribution to the United States“…”This year (meaning 2021) is important for the Macedonian Americans, because September 8 marks the 30th anniversary of the independence of a Macedonian state.“…”The House of Representatives expresses its warm congratulations and best wishes to all Macedonians around the world for the celebration of the Macedonian Independence Day». It should be recalled that on September 8, 1991, the referendum on the independence of this state was held in Skopje, hence their 30th anniversary. The above mentioned in the resolution, in the original text, ie in English, are as follows: "Expressing support for the designation of the month of September 2022 as “Macedonian American Heritage Month” and celebrating the Macedonian language, history, and culture of Macedonian Americans and their incredible contributions to the United States“…”this year is significant for Macedonian Americans because September 8, 2021, marks the 30th anniversary of the independence of a Macedonian state“…”the House of Representatives expresses warm congratulations and best wishes to all Macedonian people around the world as they mark Macedonian Independence Day».
In conclusion, we can say that the Prespa Agreement is very high on the US agenda, which will do everything in its power to preserve it. Of course, we did not expect the Americans to support our national issues, since Greek politicians do not. We must ensure our own rights and have the courage to react decisively when our allies act against the interests of our homeland.
PS: We must not forget the role of the deep parastate in our country, which acted on September 8, 2018 in Thessaloniki in order to dissolve the rally against the Prespa Agreement. What forces were he hiding behind?
