After its triumphant election, the government of N.D. is marching in a centrist policy with fellow travelers and executives of the modernizing PASOK in critical Ministries, and calls on all citizens, and those who did not vote for it, to embrace the measures it is taking in this direction. So all the citizens in the... Center, and of course not in the city center or in an entertainment center ... alas... the Center Party!
Who is this blessed Center, which all politicians invoke to show their human-centered disposition, and their interest in all citizens without distinctions of Right, Far Right, Social Democracy and Left? In reality, the Center is the place where historically, politically and socially the progressive democratic faction moves, either in the name of the modernization of H. Trikoupis, or in the name of the political liberalism of E. Venizelos, or in the name of the Social Change of A. .Papandreou, or the modernization of K. Simitis.
The term Center in modern politics usually expresses the ideologies of social liberalism, which combine center-right and center-left elements, as opposed to political changes, which turn citizens either to the Right or to the Left. Modern centrist parties, liberal in their majority, support mixed economy and open society tending to the center-left.
Today, the political game is played mainly at the level of practical and daily actions, rather than at the ideological level. Living conditions on the world stage are leading to the greatest ideological-political convergence to date, and political forces are trying to become as attractive as possible and to differentiate themselves from each other. on the other hand, looking to create new political terminologies modeled on the Center, without, of course, abandoning their ideological tradition. We should not, however, forget what Evangelos Venizelos recently emphasized, that the Center is not the clearing point of the Left and the Right. It is a very demanding attitude, related to the quality of Democracy. And it is a fact that the Center has a tradition, which tends, along with so many others, to be misinterpreted in our time.
The Center is increasingly sought by voters, who are tired of the toxic ideological confrontation brought by SYRIZA, and at the same time the government is trying to convince the citizens that it is not seeking political polarization, but moderation, seeking to provide a solution to the daily problems of society with a "multipotent, multidimensional modernization".
From the 1990s onwards, and especially after the modernization policy of K. Simitis, the Center area played a leading role in the developments. It is obvious, of course, that the concept of progress is identified with development, which requires modernization, and consequently reforms, which were left pending for years due to the interest groups and the pathogenicity of the bureaucracy in our country.
Nowadays, the economic crisis with harsh austerity and in combination with the pandemic have highlighted the shortcomings of the state, the need for reforms, but also the importance of the political moderation of the Center. Modernization concerns all levels of society, and citizens are anxiously awaiting the results of the new centrist modernizing Right.
