The proliferation of nuclear weapons in the post-Cold War era makes the nuclear balance more complex, uncertain, and dangerous.
The title of the articles by M. Karasarini, P. Economou, S. Rizas and Ath. Platias "Nuclear "balance on the razor's edge" gives the stamp of all the exceptionally interesting texts that I recently read in "Vima". The wars They never cease to torment the people and, according to Plato's saying: "all wars are fought for the acquisition of money."
The war in Ukraine, which does not stop, brings to mind the terrible accidents of Chernobyl and Fukushima and the uncontrolled nuclear plants, which provocatively threaten the planet.
All the articles emphasize, in their own way, the danger of the use of nuclear weapons. Today, in an international environment that has become dangerously disorganized, the uncontrolled use of nuclear weapons seriously threatens humanity. As it is pointed out, with the gradual dismantling of the treaty system between the USA and Russia, uncertainty arose, which Vladimir Putin took advantage of to express the explicit threat of the use of nuclear weapons after the invasion of Ukraine. However, the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (NPT) and its requirements have been ignored due to the interests of the nuclear-armed superpowers, which, it seems, are redesigning the world!
It is even pointed out that Artificial Intelligence, which is galloping in our time, creates escalation dynamics, while at the same time reducing the margins for human intervention. And it is precisely this de facto lack of human empathy that emerges as the new danger of the evolution of artificial intelligence, similar to that of nuclear energy, which preceded our lives.
Finally, as can be seen, while during the Cold War (1947 – 1989) a "balance of terror" prevailed between Washington and Moscow, the proliferation of nuclear weapons in the post-Cold War era makes the nuclear balance more complex, uncertain and dangerous.
In view of this danger, which the authors of the articles emphatically foresee, it is worth mentioning the anti-nuclear struggle of the International Foundation of Yannis Koutsocheras and Lena Strefi – Koutsocheras, which was founded in 1994 and is a Legal Entity of Private Law with a public benefit, non-profit character and headquartered in Athens. Its purpose is the rescue and exploitation of the political and poetic archive of Yannis Koutsocheras, as well as the dissemination of the ideas of humanism and Greek culture in general.
This Foundation calls on citizens to create an open group to fight against nuclear exploitation, to highlight the dangers of nuclear weapons, which undermine peace, support wars, such as the current one in Ukraine, and level peoples and cultures. Citizen mobilization is necessary and the Foundation's appeal attempts to call on citizens and challenge them to reflect on the dangers of nuclear weapons and to unite their voices in a coordinated and peaceful way against nuclear exploitation.
Let's all pay attention to the danger!
